Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With only 2 percent of the student population involved in the 33 fraternities and sororities, it is safe to say that Stony Brook is not a largely Greek-based university. Greek life does sponsor many of the events that take place across campus and undertake numerous fundraisers. Sigma Lamda Gamma, for example, prides itself on community service. Members work with Toys for Tots, mentor with ALMA (a mentoring program), volunteer with the homeless, help with an Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Banquet, and collect non-perishables for the Port Jefferson Food Pantry. Many others also sponsor community and charity events. Like most Greek organizations, though, they do throw many off-campus parties.

If you are interested in pledging, there is ample opportunity. The Fraternity and Sorority Fair is where you can really get a good idea of what each frat and sorority has to offer. Both sororities and fraternities go through a recruiting phase at the beginning of each semester. Even if you are not planning to pledge, you can still go to the parties and get to know members in a more relaxed atmosphere. Members of Greek organizations will tell you that many students don’t like them, and that it is an unfounded hate. Brothers and sisters alike believe that there are those that dislike them because they are not part of the Greek community or don’t understand it. As with pretty much everything at Stony Brook, however, Greek life is what you make of it. If you’re interested in it, there are plenty of choices and opportunities. If you can’t stand it or are just completely indifferent, it won’t really affect your life in any way.

Atypical Greek Life

Stony Brook does not have a normal Greek life. There are no actual Fraternity or Sorority houses; the members simply rent out houses near the campus. There is also a lot of controversy over which frats are recognized and which are not. They put on some events throughout the year. There are frat parties every night, but you have to pay to get in and for a cab ride back to the dorms.

Very Active

Although many times Greek Life is seen in a very negative light, coming to Stony Brook really changed my opinion. Greek life is very active and admirable here. Make sure to check in and form your own opinion because most would agree Greek Life accentuates Stony Brook.

Greek Life Is Excellent.

Greek life is what really makes the school. Although in no way do you need it to enjoy your time here it is possibly one of the best assets at Stony Brook. Generally Greeks take housing anywhere near campus by renting out normal houses. Non-Greeks view Greeks as very admirable people.
