Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At 11 p.m., the gates on South Drive are locked and access by car is limited to the main entrance off of Nicolls Road. Drivers must stop at the guard booth and show a valid Stony Brook ID to get onto campus. However, this doesn’t prevent people from walking across the railroad tracks at the LIR station into the North P Lot, or any other way onto campus for that matter. At 2 a.m., when the Central Reading Room closes in the library, University Police cars are usually present and parked right outside the building. During finals week, the libraries stay open later, and officers are positioned at every entrance of each library. Students must both show their school ID and get their bags checked.

University Police are always seen driving all around campus at any time of day. Programs, like the RSP and University Police Personal Safety Ride Program, help students stay safe. By calling the escort service number, students walking alone at night can be accompanied to their destination. This is especially helpful when trekking from the Health Sciences Center to a place like the West Apartments. The lighting on campus is at times dim and disconcerting in certain areas. There are many blue-light phones clearly visible around campus that helps to diminish crime. The police presence is definitely felt around Stony Brook. The most crime actually occurs within residence halls, usually involving stolen laptops and iPods. However, with a little bit of common sense, like keeping your door locked at all times, not taking long walks by yourself in dimly lit areas at night, especially if intoxicated, the campus is a pretty safe place to be. The surrounding area of Stony Brook is quiet and quaint, small, and suburban. If there is a safe place to be, this is probably it.

Pretty Safe

Apart from occasional drunkards, pranksters and petty thieves Stony Brook is a safe place to be. The police force is always on top of things and never leaves suspicious activity unattended.

Stony Brook Protects

Stony Brook has it's own police force and fire department on campus, as well as EMS and even special security that can escort students across campus at late hours. Call stations for emergency services are up to date and are at all areas of campus, the police force has its own emergency number given to students to call. I feel safe on Stony Brook and would hate to be any person who would cause trouble on that campus.
