Best Places to Find a Spot
  • The South P lot has many, many spaces available at all times. However, one must rely on campus busing to get to and from the actual campus. If you're in a rush, this may not be the best way to go.
  • The North P lot by the LIRR Station usually has an open spot somewhere, but it is a walk.
  • One might circle through the parking lot behind Harriman a couple of times, as it is a busy lot, and people come and go. It is a metered lot, however, and at 25 cents every fifteen minutes, the change in your pocket can disappear very quickly.
  • Sometimes one can get lucky at the parking along Engineering Drive or at the hourly lot at the end, but it is hourly parking, one dollar an hour.
  • The H Lot is large and pretty centrally located, but it can actually fill up to its capacity at the height of the day. During the week from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., there is free parking. From 4 p.m. on Friday to 7 a.m. on Monday, there is also free parking.
Good Luck Getting a Spot Here The Life Sciences Lot is always filled to capacity.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is actually a lot of parking on campus. Metered spots are located within close proximity to all buildings, as well as all-day paid parking in many convenient places. There is also free parking, but it is a bit of a walk sometimes, especially in the cold. One can park at the N Lot by the LIRR train station for commuters to and from New York City, or in the S Lot, at the far end of campus. Busing is provided for both lots, and to all residence halls, to transport students to where they need to go.

During the day, the busing is convenient and punctual. However, later in the day, buses become sparser and less timely. Just over half of the student population is commuter, so parking can fill up quickly. In the middle of the day, one can waste almost half an hour finding a metered spot. After 7 p.m., parking is free.

Plenty of Space

Parking on campus isn't a problem as long as you park in designated areas. There are plenty of lots to park on campus near dorms, the train station, and the South P lot before entering the main campus. Freshmen are not allowed to have cars on campus unless they work off campus and provide an affidavit. You need a permit to park during the weekdays from 7am to 7pm. On the off hours and the weekends, you don't need a permit.

It's Decent

As a commuter parking is free which is convenient however you will probably have to park in the south parking lot and take the bus to campus if you don't want to pay because the parking lots on campus tend to be filled. If you want a spot on campus you will have to get there pretty early.

Getting a Parking Permit

Junior and senior residents, and commuters of all levels, may apply for a parking permit. Because of the large commuter population, and the suburban sprawl of Stony Brook, the necessity of a car and a permit is utmost. Getting the permit is easy, and it can be obtained in person on the same day you apply for it. However, finding a place to park can sometimes be more challenging. One can apply online at: www.parking.sunysb.edu/permits, or e-mail SBU Parking Services at parking@stonybrook.edu for any questions, or call (631) 632-AUTO. On the weekends, and past 4 p.m. on weekdays, a permit isn’t needed to park in faculty or residential lots. And if you’re a freshman or a sophomore, there are ways to get commuter permits (even if you’re a resident) or even just parking your car in the South P lot without a permit won’t get you a ticket, since it is designated for visitor parking as well. Don’t leave your car in one spot for too long though, or they might catch on.

Did You Know? You had better watch out! Your car can get this nice bright fire-engine red lock on your wheel, and a $40 dollar ticket to get it removed. Not to mention that it takes a long while—even during the day—to get someone to come and remove it for you.
