Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If one is not fortunate enough to bring a car to school, or make friends with someone who doesn’t mind driving, public transportation will become your livelihood. Stony Brook University’s campus is fairly well removed from places like grocery stores, movie theatres, and other amenities. The HART and Suffolk County bus systems are pretty cheap, but don’t run all that often to the places you may need to go. Keeping tabs on their schedules can be important.

The Long Island Railroad is your key to getting out of Stony Brook all together. It is much cheaper to take a train to the city, and much more convenient than other modes of transportation. It is very reliable, and not all that expensive. A train to Penn Station, in the heart of the city, runs about $7.25, and the subways from Penn go to any point in the city one desires to go. The ferries offer an alternative to driving all the way around the city, or even through it. A ride across Long Island Sound takes about an hour and a half. There are concession stands on the ferries and outside decks. They are definitely a quicker way to travel up to New England, and more fun. Long Island’s MacArthur Airport was renovated, with an expansion letting in many more airlines, and making many more flights available. The postmodernist look is both cleaner and more spacious.

Very Convenient

There are 5 different bus routes within the campus and I think 4 more suffolk county busses that have Stony Brook stops. Busses within the campus are free and off are 1 dollar each way. They busses go to food stores and the mall also. The LIRR runs right through the edge of campus and is a great way to commute to the city to go home for a weekend if you dont have a car

Benefits Go to Those Who Have Cars on Campus

Living on LI, I know that the only way to get anywhere is by car. Since my father doesn't let me have my car on campus, it is the hugest disadvantage because the only way to get anywhere is either the bus (which only takes students to the mall or grocery stores) or the taxi (which costs at least $15 for a two-way drive). So, it is very hard especially when public transportation does not work around your schedule.

Transportation=Needs Improvement

There are buses that run everywhere on campus. Unfortunately the times are not listed at the bus stops and they rarely pick someone up when not at the bus stop. They are free to take but definitely for good reason. The only buses that run off campus on the weekdays are the Suffolk County buses which are not to be depended on in the least. Even on the weekends when the Stony Brook buses go to the mall they are not to be depended on. Waiting 47 minutes at a bus stop is not my idea of a good use of time.
