Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When the fall semester begins, the leaves on the trees are just starting to turn red and orange, it is a temperate sixty to seventy degrees out, and there are still a few people with short sleeves on. This is the time of year when nature looks its best on campus. By the end of that semester, sometimes, the snow has piled up so high that people don’t know if they will return from class and find their car hidden under the snow banks. Winds gust past the face, and leave streaks of tears, as one battles up the Zebra Path to get into the library. People bundled in thick coats and heavy bags knock into each other as they file into the vestibule, elevator, or classroom. Sometimes the clear blue sky results in a glare that makes it hard to see; and other times the grey clouds make for an overcast sky, and students just don’t want to see.

When the spring comes, everyone is more than excited. It is not unusual to see students running around in shorts on campus when it’s still only 45 degrees out. The fountain spurts water for all to enjoy the light spray in the air, and tank tops and sunglasses make their appearance. Well, okay, people still need the windbreakers—this is still
Stony Brook.

Definitely Bearable. Spring-Fall Is Perfect.

Long Island weather can really vary. Some winters we get snowstorms that drop two feet of snow and others, like this past winter of 2012, we have oddly mild temperatures. I've lived on the Island all my life and I like the distinct seasons. Obviously the best weather is mid-Spring to early Fall. It's not all that unusual for temps to still be around 70 in October. Good outdoors/beach weather in Spring, Summer, and Fall. If you can put up with the chance of a chilly and snowy winter, you'll be fine.

Depressing Winters

Stony Brook is the place to be during fall and spring time but during winter, it is cold depressing and lacking of color. The soul gets sucked out of campus and you barely EVER see people outside. Honestly I understand why it is ranked one of the most depressing schools in the northeast. Also buildings get too hot and you end up sweating in class. Like I said once the weather is nice campus comes to life and you see SO many people outside and everyone is just having fun and running around. The nature on campus is spectacular.
