Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you desire a school with huge tailgates before football games and fans with the team's name painted on their bare bellies, then Albany might not be what you’re looking for. Many students would rather spend their Saturdays nursing a hangover rather than waking up and supporting their team in the stands, especially if that means sitting on cold bleachers while the wind whips their faces raw. Albany is Division I and has some of the most talented athletes in the Northeast. Some of the more favorite sports include football, basketball, and lacrosse. In spring of 2011, the female lacrosse team won the America East Conference championship. This definitely made UAlbany students proud of their school and their team. However, intramural sports seem to be the most popular among students. The pressure of Division I can be straining for those looking for friendly competition and a chance to play a sport they love.

Although athletics isn’t wildly favored, it doesn’t stop students from having tons of school spirit. The Big Purple Growl, a basketball game in February with an indoor “tailgate,” is when school spirit reaches its peak. It’s a common occurrence to hear a student yell, “UA!” followed by a, “You know!” shortly after. Chants and other songs about the school are always happily sung on the shuttles at night. Students also wear their school colors and letters with pride, from sweatpants to T-shirts. Car stickers featuring the letter “A” in purple and yellow are a finishing touch for many students’ vehicles, as well.

We've Got Spirit, Yes We Do

Even though every student here doesn't keep up with UAlbany Athletics, at one point in their college career there is a high possibility that they attended one game. The Student Association gives away prizes at games which make students more likely to come and support the school teams even if it is only for a t-shirt. So we aren't the most loyal students but when we do support our teams we go all out.
