Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Albany is the archetypal college town. From bars and restaurants to shopping malls and grassy parks, the city of Albany has just about anything a college student desires. Being the capital of New York, it’s jam-packed with history, museums, and beautiful monuments. For a day of retail therapy after strenuous exams, you can check out Crossgates or Colonie malls, just a short shuttle away from campus. These malls are fairly large and house many popular stores, a large movie theater, and a variety of options at the food court. The Washington Avenue Armory is also a favorable attraction, due to the fantastic concerts it hosts, such as Dayglow and Lupe Fiasco.

Downtown Albany is especially nice during the warmer months. Washington Park is bursting with college students playing Frisbee or reading books on a picnic blanket. Nearby is Lark Street, one of the more popular locations due to a large block party known as "Lark Fest" hosted at the beginning of the year. It has cute little restaurants, bars, and nice quaint boutiques. Though the city of Albany has character, it’s really the college students that give it life. Many establishments rely on students for revenue, so they offer specials and even allow Podium Money to be used. Without them, Albany definitely wouldn’t have the ebullience it has today.

Off Campus Activities

There are a lot of possible things to do in the city of Albany. From the university, the nearest mall and Walmart are only 6 minutes away by car and bus and it goes directly back to campus. Downtown Albany, there are museums, libraries and an arena that singers and performers often perform at. There are also dance clubs that often let those 18 and older in and bars for the older undergrad and graduate students. For those who want to order food on the weekends, there are a variety of places and types of food students can choose from with extensive menus. They are also open until late hours, even on the weekdays. My friends usually like to explore different aspects of Albany and engage in activities such as laser tagging, bowling and ice skating (in the winter of course).

Could Be Better

The city has some nice areas and cool spots if you look hard enough. The area's where most kids hang out isn't very nice.

U. of a.

Capital of NY State, some historical/political areas, but mostly right nearby bars, and the "student ghetto". Farther away some nice suburbs.
