Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The easiest and most affordable mode of transportation around Albany is the CDTA (Capital District Transportation Authority) or "shuttle," as students call it. It's free with your SUNY card and takes you around the city until 2:30 a.m. During the day, it's utilized mostly for trips to Crossgates Mall or Walmart, while at night its chief duty is to transport rowdy students downtown to parties. The shuttle makes stops at Collins Circle and the Science Library. Trying to get on a shuttle downtown at night gets pretty hectic, especially since everyone tries to catch the 10:15. Prepare to "throw some bows" and hold onto your friends for dear life. The shuttles can get frustrating, however, because they claim to come every 15 minutes, but they're usually always late and crowded.

After the shuttle stops running at 2:30 a.m., most party-goers have to call a cab to get back to campus. It's $3 a head, and there are usually cabs everywhere downtown on the weekends. It's important to keep a list of cab numbers in your phone for emergencies or if your usual cab driver is on vacation. The cab drivers can be a little sketchy at times, but they'll always bring you back to campus safely. If you plan on taking a cab anywhere other than downtown, make sure you call in advance because they can take a while to get there. Also, the rates depend on your driver. Sometimes you can pay $5, and other times you'll leave with an empty wallet. Make sure you ask in advance how much it will be. If you want to go home for the weekend and don't have a car, a cab can transport you to Rensselaer Station where Amtrak and Megabus leave from, or the downtown terminal where Greyhound buses depart. You can also take Adirondack Trailways, a bus which leaves straight from campus.

Public Transportation

Public transportation in Albany is pretty good. The buses are free to all UAlbany students with just a swipe of your ID card. The buses stop right on campus so it's very convenient to students. There are also University shuttles which leave from the library and take students to specific points in downtown Albany as well as to the downtown campus and dorms. The buses run every 15-20 minutes and they run late into the night.
