Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Off-campus housing at UB is the rule, not the exception. There are so many options off campus that where you choose to live after freshman year becomes a statement about who you are. It’s common for freshmen to hear things like, “You’re a real Elmwood girl,” or “I can totally see you living in the Heights someday.” The most popular options are the big brick houses and wooden shacks in University Heights, the cookie-cutter suburban apartments that surround North Campus, and nicer apartments on the tree-lined streets of city neighborhoods such as North Buffalo, Allentown, and the Elmwood Village.

University Heights, which spreads out for a full square mile around South Campus, has been a lively, diverse student neighborhood since the early 20th century. Though most of the academic departments moved to North Campus in the ‘70s, the frat houses, bars, stores, and coffee shops in the Heights are still the epicenter of off-campus social life. Thousands of students are attracted to the area for its dirt-cheap rents (usually around $200/month) and party-ready student houses. The Heights isn’t for everyone, though; the threat of crime means that students ought to be street smart, and the high number of shoddy houses and slumlords means you need to really shop around. Students who think the Heights is a squalid ghetto move into Amherst apartments. Amherst places are safer, cleaner, and more convenient to campus; but they are far more expensive on average and pretty removed from the “college experience.” Many urban types—art majors, theater majors, and English majors—move to one of Buffalo’s upscale West Side neighborhoods. Rents are a bit steeper here, but the neighborhoods are safe (and more importantly for these students, they’re trendy).

Around North Campus or Around South Campus

North Buffalo is safe, however if you are trying to live in south or downtown it is kind of dangerous. However, the houses or apartments over there are really cheap range from 300-400 compare to North Buffalo which is from 600 up to 900(single rooms). North Buffalo don't have trains, you have to go to south to ride on trains which is more convinced but made it more unsafe in somehow. People don't really worries about finding an off campus hosing around my school, it is just depend on where do you want to live and how much do you want to put in for living. In the end I would recommend to live in North, eventhough it is not as convinent as south you could still take school buses to south and take train. The price is little bit expensive but I think safety comes first than anythingelse

Apartments for Any Price Range!

There's a huge price range as far as apartments go. You can find incredibly cheap houses and apartments for as low as 200 dollars per person plus utilities if you have a car. Those deals are usually for towns that surround the school. In the direct vicinity of the school there are three major off campus housing choices which range between 650-700 per person. There are also many options on South Campus ranging between 250-300 per person but the safety in the area is questionable. In the town of Amherst which is right off of north campus there are plenty of apartments that market towards college students and the average price is about 450 per person. All in all there are a lot of options for practically any price range.
