Off-Campus Places to Use Flex Money
College Prowler Take
The food on campus has both high and low points. There are several different places to eat, some which only accept “flex”—a declining cash balance that each student has. All the information is held electronically, and transactions are made through the barcode on the back of student IDs. There are three different meal plans: 21, 14, or 10 meals a week. The fewer meals on an account, the more flex money available. Students eat most of their meals in the cafeteria, where there are lots of options. There is a station that serves home-style foods such as meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and boiled vegetables. There is also a grill line that serves burgers, fries, and the like. Another station has pizzas and sandwiches, and there is also a salad bar. Every night there is also a different exhibition dish, which is usually something exotic. There are lots of hits and misses in the cafeteria. The worst-case scenario is when all of the “misses” occur on the same night. If that happens, it is not uncommon for students to eat desserts for all three courses (or four, or five . . . who’s counting?)

The dining hall food is not the best. Clyde’s is the best place to go for soup, sandwiches, and wraps. Java City and Clyde’s have great smoothies! |

My favorite place to eat at SU is the dining hall. There are a bunch of different stations, which offer a lot of different kinds of meals, and if all else fails, there is always the salad bar. I am a vegetarian, and I was worried that there wouldn’t be anything for me to eat at SU. I made some suggestions and complaints, and the menu was quickly changed. The food staff is very open-minded and truly cares about the needs of students. |

The dining halls, on average, are...
The dining halls, on average, are pretty good. It can get kind of boring because the food doesn’t vary as much as would be nice, but, for the most part, people are pleased and fed. There is also a little place in the gym that people go to get food, except that they don’t take the meal plan, which is kind of bad because their food is probably the best on campus, but it can be out of the way since the only building that houses classes nearest to it is Bogar. There is also a free-standing coffee stand in the student center called Java City, but it will only take flex. They have good smoothies, which are popular there, and things like cake and bagels. Lots of students go there to get something before their first class of the day. |

The food is okay. It’s not the best, but it’s better than other places I have heard of, and there are definitely a lot more choices to eat than at other schools. The dining hall is good, but it’s crowded at lunchtime. |

Did You Know?Evert Dining Hall has special themed food nights. In the past, these have included a fiesta night, with Latin-inspired food and a mariachi band and a night where students made their own caramel apples and chose toppings. Around Thanksgiving, there is a candlelight dinner where professors serve students traditional Thanksgiving food prepared by the cafeteria staff. It is a yearly highlight!
