Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The food on campus has both high and low points. There are several different places to eat, all of which allow the use of some form of meal swipe that will be deducted from the student's residential meal plan. A meal swipe cannot be used for convenience store items, but flex money—a declining cash balance that each student gets with their meal plan—can be used for these items. Crusader Cash can also be added onto students' ID cards to be used for meals, laundry, and at vending machines. All the meal plan information is held electronically, and transactions are made through the barcode on the back of each student's ID. There are three main meal plans offered at Susquehanna with 21, 14, or 10 meals a week, and there are also commuter meal plans with either 7 or 5 meals a week. Each meal plan comes with some flex money; the fewer the meals, the more flex you'll get.

Students eat most of their meals in the cafeteria, where there are lots of options. There is a station that serves home-style foods, such as meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and steamed vegetables. There is also a grill line that serves burgers, fries, and the like. Another station has sandwiches, and there is also a salad bar. Every night there is also a different exhibition dish, which is usually something exotic. There are lots of hits and misses in the cafeteria, and the worst-case scenario is when all of the “misses” occur on the same night. If that happens, it is not uncommon for students to eat desserts for all three courses (or four, or five . . . who’s counting?)!

Lots of Variety, Not Much Change

There are several places to eat on campus, and the offer a decent amount of variety. However, they don't change up the menu a lot, so you're liable to get tired of eating the same thing all the time. The food is decent. My favorite places on campus are Clyde's and Charlie's. Clyde's is out of the way, and keeps weird hours, but it serves really healthy food. Charlie's is the campus coffehouse, and is open in the evenings.

The dining hall food is not the best. Clyde’s is the best place to go for soup, sandwiches, and wraps. Java City and Clyde’s have great smoothies!
