College Prowler Take

Dorm rooms at SU are larger than most, with plenty of closet space. However, some dorm rooms are better than others. Hassinger Hall, a freshman dorm, has rooms that are far smaller than any other dorm on campus, and West Hall does not have air conditioning. Microwaves are not allowed in dorm rooms, but there is usually one per floor, which is much more convenient than it sounds and means that rooms never reek of burnt popcorn (but the hallway will).

In recent years, the trend of putting freshmen in forced triples has increased, but this setup is doable after a little experimenting with bed and desk placements. Overall, the rooms (excepting Hassinger) are large and airy, especially if there are only two students living there. Certain dorms also have reputations, particularly those that house freshmen. Seibert Hall is quiet with residents who rarely cause trouble. Smith Hall is the polar opposite: it is loud and full of rowdy students, and a rule is always being broken. But regardless, students manage to have fun wherever they live.

None of the dorms are horrible, but some are definitely nicer than others. Smith is the nicest of the freshman dorms. Aikens is a nice upperclassman dorm. Basically, if you like the people in your dorm, then you won’t mind where you are living.

I really enjoyed living in Smith my freshman year because the rooms were really new and nice, and I liked living with only freshmen.

If I had to avoid any dorm, I would probably avoid Hass because, while it’s quiet and still has a good location, the rooms are really small—especially if you aren’t used to sharing a room. Most students try for Smith, and I definitely agree with that.

I lived in Smith, and the rooms there are the biggest; it’s where most freshmen like to live. It houses more freshmen than the other dorms. Hass has the smallest rooms on campus, but it is probably one of the quietest dorms, which can be a plus. While Smith allows freshmen to meet more people and has a great location, it is really noisy all the time, no matter what time of day, which has it’s downsides, especially at night. Hass allows people to meet each other, but is a much quieter dorm, which has it’s down sides as well.

All of the dorms are mediocre. But as an upperclassman, the suites and townhouses seem like great places to stay.
