Best Time to Look for a Place
If you are going to be a junior, start early in your sophomore year! If you are already a junior and not planning on keeping the same place or are still on campus, start early in your junior year.
College Prowler Take
Students who plan to live off campus their junior year need to start looking pretty early in their sophomore year for a place to live. There are plenty of available apartments close to campus, but a lot of students are vying for the best ones. In order to live off campus, students need to enter their names into the off-campus lottery by a deadline; most who enter the lottery get off campus. Popular places to live include “Warehouse,” an apartment complex converted from an old warehouse, and Orange Street and University Avenue, where students rent one half of a house. Most students live in groups of three or two. The town itself caters to off-campus students, with a laundromat close to the school. Students need to pay attention to town ordinances to avoid breaking one, like forgetting to move their cars on days the streets are swept. Students also need to be considerate and watch out for noise violations, as they are living in a residential area with families who do not always appreciate the college-student way of life. While living on campus is a much easier option and favored by some, those who live off campus rarely seem to regret their decision. Plus they get a taste of the real world by being responsible for bills, putting out the garbage, cleaning their own bathrooms, and other tasks that students living on campus do not have to worry about. You may have trouble as a sophomore getting off campus, but a lot of juniors and seniors are off campus. It can be worth it if you like taking care of everything and making your own food. |

Off-campus housing isn’t...
Off-campus housing isn’t something I would normally recommend to someone unless they are a junior or senior because it can be hard to get it unless you are an older student. Project housing is a really good option because it is off campus but still considered a dorm, so it doesn’t have any different cost than the dorms. With true off-campus housing, you have to take care of your own garbage and cleaning, whereas in project housing, a cleaning woman comes and still cleans the bathrooms and takes care of the trash. If I am right, you have to take care of bills as well, and it can be a pain compared to dorm life. However, it is a nice step to go out into the real world, and I know lots of students who have done it and really enjoyed it. |

The housing is not very...
The housing is not very convenient. It’s hard to get a house off campus, and even still, many landlords will not rent out to male students. The most popular off-campus housing is along Orange Street, which tends to be where many of the off-campus parties are held. From what I’ve seen, the houses that are available are fairly old, so I wouldn’t say that it’s worth living off campus unless you’re adventuresome. |
