Campus Grabs and Holds Attention

This campus is truly beautiful. It looks just as good in person as it does in the professionally done advertising pictures. The squirrels here serve as entertainment as you're walking from class to class - walks, I might add, that, at longest, last only about five minutes. The closeness of our academic buildings makes everything SO much easier than at larger schools.

Our academics at SU are important to everyone, but you will still find the SGA president at a party on Saturday night, right next to a baseball player. The social lines on this campus are nearly nonexistent - we're all students at SU and so we all work to get along and help each other out.

Here but Not a Huge Deal

Greek life is whatever. There are frats and sororities but there is no pressure either way if you want to be in one or not.

Typical All-American School in a Rural Setting

Susquehanna is basically your typical all-American school. Most students here are from working class and middle class families, mostly from rural Pennsylvania and New Jersey. There aren't many minorities in any sense of the word. Most of the people here could probably be classified as jocky, redneck, or preppy. The social scene is lacking; the only thing to do is party, and there are weekends when there aren't any being thrown. The school tries to put on activities over the weekend, but they are very poorly attended by students. There is a small mall, movie theater, restraunts, Walmart, and some other chain stores withing ten minutes. Other than that, the school's pretty remote, so its difficult to get to entertainment.

Great School

I absolutely love it on campus here. There might not be a lot around the school, but there are plenty of events to go to. There is a nightclub on campus which is open every Saturday night and sometimes Fridays. There are plenty of special speakers and musical performances. The dorms are nice and the food is average. The faculty really gets to know you and they really care about your grades and your well being. The school is large enough that you know a lot of people on campus, but is large enough to meet plenty of new people. And I definitely cannot forget the squirrels that are everywhere on campus. I love this school and suggest to anyone who wants a rural school with great academics and opportunities while still having a place for a good time.

I love Susquehanna. I was disappointed when they wouldn’t let the fraternities have on-campus parties anymore, but otherwise I couldn’t be happier. It is a gorgeous campus, and the people are really nice. The professors are friendly, and it is really easy to get involved and play a large part in an organization.

Some people do drugs, but it is not really out in the open. If that is your thing, it is available for you. If it is not your thing, you most likely won’t be confronted with it. Nobody asks anybody to buy drugs or anything. People who do drugs basically keep it quiet.

The drug scene isn’t huge at SU, but it is there. To be honest, I find that most people are pretty polite about taking drugs. I have friends who take drugs but have never forced me to try them and normally go to a separate room to do them. Drugs are on campus, there is no arguing that, but they are on every campus, and no matter where a student goes, drugs are going to be there. The nice thing about SU is that they do not dominate us.

Many people are involved in sororities and fraternities, but you don’t have to be a part of it to have a social life. Greeks are associated with people outside of their frats/sororities, and everyone basically hangs out together. Non-Greeks are almost always welcome to parties, that is definitely not a problem. I am not in a sorority, so I can’t really say what it is like. I do have many friends who are in frats/sororities, and they really enjoy it.

None of the dorms are horrible, but some are definitely nicer than others. Smith is the nicest of the freshman dorms. Aikens is a nice upperclassman dorm. Basically, if you like the people in your dorm, then you won’t mind where you are living.

The computer network is pretty good for the most part at school. I highly suggest bringing your own computer as the computer labs can get full during peak hours of the day. There are several on campus, which is nice, but the main ones, such as in the library or in Deg, are crowded during lunch hours, dinner hours, after dinner, and during finals period when it seems like everyone needs a computer for some reason or another. However, it doesn’t matter whether you bring a laptop or a desktop, both have their advantages.

Because Selinsgrove is a relatively safe town on its own, the police force is not extremely large. Public Safety on campus is very responsive to any problems, and it handles everything appropriately. They’re also really down-to-earth people as well; it’s nice to see that they really do care about the students’ well-being.

In an effort to grow into a larger school, Susquehanna has recently increased its acceptance rate up to about 80 percent. The incoming freshmen class is dumber then ever and takes away from the academics. The school's academics should deffinantly not be ranked a B+ anymore. I go here and dont think it's even close.

A+ Music Education Academics

The Music education program at SU is among the most comprehensive and challenging programs in the state. Piano and ear training courses are accelerated in comparison to larger schools and cover more ground. The school requires five levels of music theory for a degree, which is more than other colleges in the state. Music education courses are extremely comprehensive and thought out, thanks to a restructuring of the program. Students aren't forgotten and only will fail if they allow themselves to fail or lack passion for their work.

There are numerous performance opportunities and studio functions are largely strong. Unfortunately, music education majors are often torn between dividing time between performing or academics because of the fast curriculum. Facilities are plentiful and well equipped. Computer labs are up to date with plenty of software, performing halls are acoustically sound and modern, and classrooms are all in good condition. On top of it all, the music department and education facilities are all aesthetically beautiful.

Finally, students can often get customized touches to their experience, thanks to the small school. Sometimes, students will opt to take independent study with professors in order to specialize in conducting, theory, improvisation, etc. Instrument and voice instructors treat education majors equally with performance majors, which means high standards of musicianship. Overall, the education academics are very strong and the base of music education majors is steadily growing. Susquehanna University has the reputation for having the best music education majors for a reason!

House Parties and Underage Drinking

Sometimes it seems like everyone drinks here. Honestly, I'm not a huge partier, but it is so easy to go to a house party- especially if you are female. Girls get in free most of times, and guys can get in by paying and by bringing a certain number of girls. It doesn't matter if you're underage. The police station is located right next to the main row of party homes, but that doesn't deter parties one bit. There are parties every weekend. I have heard that they run out of alcohol quickly, so most people "pregame" in their dorms. Be sure to bring your own alcohol to your dorm. They will really only check for it over breaks, so hide it well or bring it home then, and they will also only check if they have a good reason. Most RAs are pretty laid back, so they barely write people up. If you party, come here. You can get shlammered. If you don't, good luck finding something to do on weekends. Oh and there are bars in town that are within walking (or crawling) distance if you are 21+.

I lived in Smith, and the rooms there are the biggest; it’s where most freshmen like to live. It houses more freshmen than the other dorms. Hass has the smallest rooms on campus, but it is probably one of the quietest dorms, which can be a plus. While Smith allows freshmen to meet more people and has a great location, it is really noisy all the time, no matter what time of day, which has it’s downsides, especially at night. Hass allows people to meet each other, but is a much quieter dorm, which has it’s down sides as well.

I wish Greek life had more of a presence on campus, and I wish there was a larger party scene. This, however, has made many people change schools. I think that the academics are very strong, and the people are great. I enjoy hanging around with my friends on weekends, and the campus is very safe. There is plenty of stuff to do. However, if I were not willing to go out and find my own fun, I wouldn’t like Susquehanna. I feel comfortable at SU, and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

I’ve loved my time at Susquehanna, but I also remember how it used to be before it got strict. I wouldn’t change anything; I love my friends and the memories—but if I were applying to colleges now, I don’t think I’d go here. The feeling I got when I walked on this campus three years ago is not the feeling that the campus gives off now.

Cheap Parking

Parking permits are only $20 for the year and there is always parking. The only downside is that freshman have somewhat of a hike to get to their cars, but theres parking for upperclassmen everywhere. Another annoying thing is that the do like to ticket on campus. If you are parked in a spot you are not allowed in, you most likely will get ticketed even if you park there for a short amount of time.
