College Prowler Take

Public safety and health services at SU are great. All of the public safety officers are approachable and not intimidating or commanding. They make themselves visible on campus, and in the event that there is some sort of disturbance, they are quick to the scene. The campus itself feels very safe; students frequently walk by themselves late at night on their way from one building to another. However, when women walk home from off-campus parties, it is definitely a good idea to walk with at least one other person, just in case. There are many situations where a student’s safety is dependent on his own common sense as well as that of his friends. SU has had several sexual assaults in recent years, and although date rape and assault happen on all campuses, the same rules remain the most effective: Don’t put your drink down, don’t go anywhere by yourself, and always make sure your friends are accounted for. There is a standing joke between females at SU that whatever symptoms you walk into the health center with, the nurses will always ask if you need a pregnancy test. Although it seems slightly odd to be offered a pregnancy test when you’ve sprained your ankle, it’s a relief that the nurses and doctors are willing to discuss sexual activity frankly with students, as well as offer contraceptives, if needed.

Security is pretty good on campus for the most part. The walkways are pretty well lit unless you live down on University Avenue, where the sidewalks aren’t as well lit. But most people live on campus, and everything there is really well lit. It’s rare to find a time when you are the only one wandering around the campus, even at one o’clock in the morning. And when living in the dorms, there’s always an RA on duty throughout the day, so if an accident happens, there’s always someone to find.

Security has gotten better over the past year. I feel safe on campus; however, it could use more lighting.

We have public safety officers who drive around most of the night looking out for things. They aren’t breathing down your back constantly.

Because Selinsgrove is a relatively safe town on its own, the police force is not extremely large. Public Safety on campus is very responsive to any problems, and it handles everything appropriately. They’re also really down-to-earth people as well; it’s nice to see that they really do care about the students’ well-being.

A physician assistant is available 20 hours a week at the health center to see students and give prescriptions.

Sigma Phi Epsilon, a fraternity on campus, has brothers available to walk students anywhere they need to go on campus.

The counseling center and the health center both have a nurse or counselor on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are also “health drivers” available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to take students to the hospital if they need to go.
