Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The drug scene on campus is present but tends to affect different students in different ways and is not at all intimidating. Like any “we-put-the-liberal-in-liberal-arts” college, marijuana use is relatively widespread, and the administration generally turns a blind eye to any petty use that may rear its head. But, other than marijuana, there are very few drugs that have a visible position in campus life. Anyone wishing to abstain from drug use will easily able to do so, and there are, at least seemingly, few cases of serious drug abuse on campus.

Alcohol, the other widespread drug on campus, is very easy to come by, particularly on weekends when campus parties are often flowing with it. The alcohol scene at Swarthmore is not nearly as bad as at other schools, however, and anyone wishing to resist can do so without the risk of being ostracized. While Swarthmore has its share of people who have hangovers and hospital visits (none serious), few chronic cases of alcohol abuse seem to be present.

Alcohol is certainly the most popular choice. If you stay within campus, there is substantial freedom as to your actions. Drug usage is usually limited to smoking, and people are very tolerant and open to whatever you choose to do, whether it be to partake in it or not at all.

No One Feels Pressured but...

The presence of weed and alcohol on campus is obvious. The administration and RAs turn a blind eye to most partying, which is convenient for those who partake, but can be disruptive for those who don’t. Of course, depending on the dorm you are in, your experience with Swarthmore’s party life can be very different. Parrish is known for being a quiet dorm, while Willets reeks of weed and booze every weekend.

People usually drink a lot, especially under peer pressure. Drugs are generally not consumed that much.
