For the most part, the drug scene on campus is present but tends to affect different students in different ways and is not at all intimidating. Like any “we-put-the-liberal-in-liberal-arts” college, marijuana use is pretty widespread, and the administration generally turns a blind eye to any petty use that may rear its head. Other than marijuana, there are very few other drugs that have a visible position in campus life. Anyone wishing to abstain from drug use is easily able to do so, and there are, at least seemingly, few cases of serious drug abuse on campus.
Alcohol, the other widespread drug on campus, is very easy to come by, particularly on weekends when campus parties are often flowing with it. The alcohol scene at Swarthmore is not nearly as bad as at other schools, however, and anyone wishing to resist can do so without the risk of being ostracized. While Swarthmore has its share of people that have hangovers and hospital visits (none serious), few chronic cases of alcohol abuse seem to be present.

Ninety-nine percent of students here opt not to get involved with heavier drugs. It’s just too risky. |

I think some students here use marijuana, but not a huge number. Also, I doubt there are many students that do harder drugs here. They couldn’t keep up with the work if they were. |

Drugs are present, just like anywhere else. I don’t think they are a big problem at Swat, though. |

Sometimes I wish there were more drug use on campus. I’m an occasional pot smoker, and when I decide to smoke, I feel like an outcast. I guess this intolerancefor illegal substances is a good trait for a school to possess, though. |
