Social Scene
Considering its small size and the timid personalities of many of its students, Swarthmore has a surprisingly active social scene. The Student Activities Committee (SAC) sponsors most open-campus parties, and under the condition that the hosts of the party advertise the party widely and allow any student to enter, the group will give hosts a generous stipend for party expenses, sometimes exceeding $500 for the larger parties. SAC's contribution makes most campus parties (and alcohol) free to any student and a guest. The bars and clubs in Philly always remain an option for students, but most Swatties conveniently choose to stay on campus for partying. There are still a large number of students who stay in at night, and movies, lectures, and performances can provide a good alternative to the party scene. Students are never ostracized for staying in or not partying, but if you want to get your party on, there are a good number of opportunities to "get down" at Swat on the average weekend.
Hookups or Relationships?
There are very few long-term relationships on campus, and romance is generally nonexistent. Most of the attached students here have boyfriends or girlfriends outside of Swarthmore. Hookups occur pretty frequently, but because of the school's small size, everyone knows everybody else (or at least knows of them), and therefore, word spreads quickly on Sunday mornings about who did what with whom the night before.
Dress Code
The dress style here can range from pajamas to ripped jeans and an (insert liberal cause here) T-shirt. Anything goes at Swat-really. This is great for expressive spirits but bad for the overall attractiveness of the student body.
