College Prowler Take
Unless you want to eat pizza or Chinese food 15 times week, you might want to consider venturing off campus a few days a week. Yes, eating off campus takes a little planning for the culinary-deprived Swattie. The Ville, or downtown Swarthmore, has little in the way of dining that stays open late enough to cater to college students, and usually, students end up eating on campus or ordering out to pizza places or Chinese restaurants that deliver. On the bright side, there seems to be a million pizza places that compete for Swarthmore’s business, so pizza prices generally stay low, and they are constantly introducing new recipes. For the more adventurous Swattie, there’s the Baltimore Pike, a short 20-minute walk from campus, which has a list of chain restaurants, including Houlihan’s, Panera Bread, Einstein Bagels, and Outback Steakhouse. Restaurants along the Pike provide students a refreshing break from Sharples and Essie Mae’s. But, for the true restaurant connoisseur, Philadelphia provides a surprisingly wide variety of excellent restaurants. Unless your parents are with you, the final bill at some of the city’s more established restaurants can be a bit daunting. However, with a little searching, particularly in Chinatown and South Philly, you can find an excellent, hole-in-the-wall, restaurant with entrees for less than $10. Crawl on in and eat!

Philly has good food, but you need a car to get to most of the really good restaurants. Cheng Hing is really good, and close, too. Renato’s stays open late, so that’s always a plus. |

There are a few decent (but small) restaurants in the Ville, and there are also some good ones on Baltimore Pike (outside of the town of Swarthmore, but not far), but I only rarely eat off campus. John Harvard’s Brew House is one really good place that I eat at as much as possible. They serve great American food. |

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate Swarthmore Pizza as an 8. I’ve only eaten there four times, though, so if I keep eating there I might get sick of it and the rating might go down a point or two. |

The restaurants around campus seem like your typical suburban-type eateries to me. Panera Bread is good for sandwiches, Cheng Hing has decent Chinese, and there’s a good Mexican restaurant—Baja Fresh. All are pretty good, around the same price, and seem to serve a lot of families and older people. You certainly won’t go broke or hungry with the selections around Swarthmore. |

Restaurants around Swarthmore are all right; there is nothing too special from what I’ve seen. Chances are, you have a better selection back home. |

Did You Know?Philadelphia cheesesteak experts claim that the most authentic cheesesteaks must include Cheese Whiz. They also say that if you get your cheesesteak more than an hour away from South Philly, the sandwich is not authentic. Tastykakes were invented over 90 years ago in Philadelphia.
