College Prowler Take
Most people stress bringing a personal computer, but that is not to say that Syracuse doesn’t offer an abundance of resources to its students. With many 24-hour workstations spread around campus, a communal computer is always available for student use. There are really only two reasons you absolutely need your own computer: leisure activities (surfing the Internet, downloading mp3s, talking on Instant Messenger, and playing computer games) or to do your work without trudging through feet of snow. Like most campuses, students basically live on Instant Messenger, and unlike most campuses, it snows a lot. One reason students have developed a love affair with using Instant Messenger services, as well as wasting all their computer’s memory on downloaded music is the incredible Ethernet service that SU provides. It is fast, reliable, and convenient. Be careful, though—if it should malfunction, it could take days to get ResNet to fix it. As for whether you should bring a laptop or a PC, the best choice is a laptop. Having the option of bringing in a project to class on PowerPoint or bringing your work to the library or a lounge on campus is invaluable.

Some of the computer labs here are great, while others simply suck. The badly-maintained labs are not that fast and do not work properly. The great labs have computers with excellent speed, efficiency, and network connections. |

Some of the computer labs are open 24 hours a day, but bring your own computer anyway. |

I would have brought my own computer if I’d had one. The labs get pretty crowded during the day, but at night, they’re not too bad. |

Most of the students I’ve met own their own computers. The computer clusters around campus have been helpful for me because they are open 24 hours and have a good atmosphere to complete my work. |

The computer labs are good, but it can be a big pain to have to go the whole way to the nearest computer cluster, especially when the weather sucks. So I would suggest that you bring a computer with you. |
