Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The area around the Syracuse campus is not the safest at night. Armed robberies that occur on the outskirts of campus are reported almost bi-weekly. Still, the frequency of these instances is on the decline, as SU takes steps to remedy the situation. Recently, the Public Safety Officers on campus have been converted to “peace officers.” Still, if you do not walk alone after dark on a few notorious streets, you should stay unharmed during your four years at school. In other words, just use common sense.

One major note-the city Syracuse displays a strong dissemblance to the campus of Syracuse when discussing safety and security. Although some robberies occur on the outskirts of SU, more serous crimes like shootings, burglaries, and gang activity occur mostly in the inner city. Just don’t venture to that part of the city, especially not alone. Despite the fact that Syracuse is surrounded by a fairly rural area of Central New York, it still is a city with high crime rates. Just be careful, but don’t get overly stressed.

Really Safe

I always feel comfortable at Syracuse when walking the campus. It doesn't matter the time of day or night. It is suggested that you keep doors locked but I have never had any problems.

Don't Come Here!

Syracuse as a city is pretty sketchy, take a step off campus and you're in the ghetto. As a campus, it's alright in terms of safety, but a lot of sketchy people seem to come near campus--there are countless robberies and muggings every year. They have a blue light system, but it's not going to help you if someone's chasing after you, especially on South campus, where they don't have nearly enough lights!

Safe

It is suggested that girls do not travel alone at night, but on campus it isn't really a big issue... Also, I'm not a girl so it doesn't really affect me.
