Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The area around the Syracuse campus is not the safest at night. Armed robberies that occur on the outskirts of campus are reported almost bi-weekly. Still, the frequency of these instances is on the decline, as SU takes steps to remedy the situation. Recently, the Public Safety Officers on campus have been converted to “peace officers.” Still, if you do not walk alone after dark on a few notorious streets, you should stay unharmed during your four years at school. In other words, just use common sense.

One major note-the city Syracuse displays a strong dissemblance to the campus of Syracuse when discussing safety and security. Although some robberies occur on the outskirts of SU, more serous crimes like shootings, burglaries, and gang activity occur mostly in the inner city. Just don’t venture to that part of the city, especially not alone. Despite the fact that Syracuse is surrounded by a fairly rural area of Central New York, it still is a city with high crime rates. Just be careful, but don’t get overly stressed.

Safe

It is suggested that girls do not travel alone at night, but on campus it isn't really a big issue... Also, I'm not a girl so it doesn't really affect me.

Stay Close by

It is ill-advised to venture very far off campus as some of the city's worst areas border SU. However, the surrounding off-campus housing on Euclid as well as down towards Madison Ave are relatively safe with the exception of Thorndon Park

Safe...If You Stay Within the "Bubble"

Syracuse is a bubble. as much as I hate admitting it, it's located smack dab in the ghettos of syracuse. The surrounding area is pretty poor. we always get notifications about "off-campus robberies." with that being said, it's pretty safe if you walk with a friend, and if you're a girl, try to walk with a guy esp late at night. BUT you can always call public safety. they have drivers that drive you around. however on the weekends, they can be assholes cause they get so many calls from drunk people.

Dorms are very strict about who can come in. you have to sign in visitors after 8pm.

DPS(the campus police) is a pain and have been cracking down on parties so it kinda sucks.

Just be smart and you'll be fine.
