Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Whenever discussing Syracuse, it is important to distinguish between the city of Syracuse and the University of Syracuse. Never is it more evident than in this section. SU is the castle on top of the Syracuse hill. Since Syracuse is a large university, most students find contentment in staying on campus because there is usually something going on. For those students that wish to venture off the campus, there are still options for them in the city of Syracuse and the surrounding areas.

There isn’t much going on in the actual city of Syracuse; however, Carousel Mall is a popular hangout for SU students. The mall, most of the time, is far more populated by Syracuse high school kids. Then, there is Turning Stone Casino, a quick 30-minute drive from the campus, where students can legally gamble away what little money they have left. You can also bowl, barhop, or catch a movie, again at Carousel Mall. Your best option to get out of the routine for a weekend is to head to Montreal, only a four-hour trip. Also, SU is huge, so seeing a Lemoyne College or Onondaga Community College student on SU’s campus is about as rare as a warm front.

Gem in a 'City in Decline'

When I toured SU the guide referenced the city of Syracuse as a "city in decline" which is very accurate. Luckily, there's no reason to go venturing any further than the surrounding off campus housing and the nearby Marshall St bars.

Always Something

I agree with many others when they say that Syracuse was once a thriving city, however like many other northern industrial areas, it has seen better days. There is currently a revival going on in many areas. There is always something to cater to your interests in Syracuse. Several good bars, house or frat parties, many good concerts at the Westcott Theater, The Lost Horizon, or even The OnCenter. Armory Square is a very cool artsy part of downtown with many cool shops and is comparable to U Street in DC. It is accessible by the Connective Corridor bus. There's the $2 bus to Carousel Mall to see movies, the War Memorial for hockey games or shows, and Marshall Street is always a great place. If someone says there is nothing to do in Syracuse, they're lying or are easily bored.
