Whenever discussing Syracuse, it is important to distinguish between the city of Syracuse and the University of Syracuse. Never is it more evident than in this section. SU is the castle on top of the Syracuse hill. Since Syracuse is a large university, most students find contentment in staying on campus because there is usually something going on. For those students that wish to venture off the campus, there are still options for them in the city of Syracuse and the surrounding areas.

There isn’t much going on in the actual city of Syracuse; however, Carousel Mall is a popular hangout for SU students. The mall, most of the time, is far more populated by Syracuse high school kids. Then, there is Turning Stone Casino, a quick 30-minute drive from the campus, where students can legally gamble away what little money they have left. You can also bowl, barhop, or catch a movie, again at Carousel Mall. Your best option to get out of the routine for a weekend is to head to Montreal, only a four-hour trip. Also, SU is huge, so seeing a Lemoyne College or Onondaga Community College student on SU’s campus is about as rare as a warm front.

The city of Syracuse is absolutely...

The city of Syracuse is absolutely bleak, and its atmosphere is depressing. I prefer to avoid going into the city at all costs. Between the stores on Marshall Street and the Carousel Mall (which are both only mediocre), I manage to get all the things I need. However, I wouldn't mind having access to a city that is more lively and that has a decent nightlife/cultural scene. Syracuse is dismal in that respect.

All I can say is Syracuse is definitely a good time. The party scene is usually bumping, and even on those slow nights, you can always just kick back, buy a 30-case, and play Madden and beer pong!

You do have quite a lot to do in Syracuse. We have the Carousel Mall to brag about, one of the most complete and largest malls in New York state. If you are a gaming freak, Shoppingtown Mall is the place for you. There are also the outdoor arts and antique shows, annual festivals and fairs, Sunday-night bowling, ice-skating, the Syracuse Zoo, the Jamesville Lake, and so many other exciting places to go to.

The city is so-so. There are other universities around, but we don’t see much of them. You don’t want to get lost around Syracuse at night, but there are some cool places like Armory Square and Carousel Center.
