Getting a Parking Permit

There are on-campus permit, dorm permits with a garage, and dorm permits without a garage.

College Prowler Take

The majority of freshmen will begin their college careers without cars. There is a reason for this. Walking to events like frat parties or off-campus parties, or heading down to Marshall Street for a bite to eat, must now become somewhat of a communal thing that involves more than just you and your best friend. You meet new people, enjoy some long conversations on the way to certain places, and can bond with the friends you have just met a few months before. And you will never need to drive to class, as all dorms are within a 10-minute walk from classes, even if you had a car.

Still, when it gets freezing, snowy, and windy sometime around November, it’s nice to have a way to get around a little if you need to make a long trip. Parking is tough for those with a car, especially away from the dorms. Most dorms have a garage near them that students can park in for about $400 each year. It is near impossible to park on campus where your classes might be, and it is almost as hard to park on Marshall Street, especially at night. Students who choose to live on South Campus in their sophomore years will have a tougher time getting around, and relying on the bus at all times can be a pain. These students, as well as students who live off campus in their junior or senior years, should look into getting a car.

Freshmen are not allowed to bring a car unless specified by the University. Parking is pretty expensive on campus. You must register your car for parking access, and you can only park the car you registered unless you pay extra.

You cannot park on campus unless you have an official permit to park in a particular parking lot. When driving off campus, parking can be tight at times, but is not a serious problem.

It’s not really easy to park on campus. It’s pretty crowded most of the time.

Parking is a big problem for students on campus because there is no place to park between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. You cannot drive on campus at all during those times, basically. The dorms are a short walk from the main campus, but if you do have a car and want to bring it with you, be prepared to pay as little as $50 for a lot a mile away from campus or $500 for a spot in a garage on campus.

Did You Know?

Best Places to Find a Parking Spot
During the morning, the Bird Library parking lot. In the afternoon, the only safe place to park and not get a ticket would be in the dorm parking lots. At night, you can park in one of the Marshall Street lots.

Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here!
Anywhere on campus. Technically, unless you have an on-campus parking pass (which you can’t get as a freshman), you are not even allowed to drive your car on campus unless it is late at night.
