College Prowler Take

The area around the Syracuse campus is not the safest at night. Armed robberies that occur on the outskirts of campus are reported almost bi-weekly. Still, the frequency of these instances is on the decline, as SU takes steps to remedy the situation. Recently, the Public Safety Officers on campus have been converted to “peace officers.” Still, if you do not walk alone after dark on a few notorious streets, you should stay unharmed during your four years at school. In other words, just use common sense.

One major note-the city Syracuse displays a strong dissemblance to the campus of Syracuse when discussing safety and security. Although some robberies occur on the outskirts of SU, more serous crimes like shootings, burglaries, and gang activity occur mostly in the inner city. Just don’t venture to that part of the city, especially not alone. Despite the fact that Syracuse is surrounded by a fairly rural area of Central New York, it still is a city with high crime rates. Just be careful, but don’t get overly stressed.

Public Safety is an absolute joke....

Public Safety is an absolute joke. They prevent nothing. They are unarmed and disrespected, which lowers their potential shot at some kind of authority. All they are good for is busting kids for drinking or smoking in the dorms.

Public Safety runs a ‘Shuttle Home’ service. If any student ever feels that it would be unsafe to walk home, whether from a late class or even from being out late partying, this shuttle provides a ride home.

SU has a Public Safety service, which is separate from the Syracuse Police Department. SU also has a blue-light phone system. I’ve never had to use it, though.

Overall, security is pretty good. They could do more, but for the most part, the campus is pretty safe.

There is a blue-light call-box system in place, but obviously, like anywhere, you shouldn’t walk anywhere alone at night.
