Worst Things

  1. Windy afternoons on Marshall Street
  2. Dining hall food
  3. Teaching assistants who barely speak English, and part-time professors who don't like their jobs
  4. The very average football team
  5. Bar raids
  6. Being able to walk into class and have the weather be 30 degrees and sunny, and then walking out of class an hour later to find a blizzard, sub-zero weather, and winds up to 30 miles per hour
  7. Not clear enough? The weather is awful!
  8. The outskirts of campus are not as safe as one would like
  9. Dorm downfalls, like the endless stairs to the Mount, the "ghetto" areas of Brewster and Boland, and the "middle of nowhere" feel of Lawrinson and Sadler
  10. Pick up that Freshmen 15 anyway

No One Goes to SU for Weather

Honestly, it's Syracuse, NY, it's going to be cold. I found personally the cold is not what gets to you, IT'S ALWAYS CLOUDY. The cloudy days really got to me especially coming from the typically sunny Washington, DC. My outlook has been slightly skewed this year as 2011 has been a warmer-than-usual winter. Almost no snowfall at all through the end of December. It shows how much one year can vary (ie: December 2010 had a record 72" of snow! ) There are occasional sunny, warm days through winter and everyone always takes advantage. However there are plenty of cold, windy nights to match. As a freshman in BBB, no one ever wants to trek 15 minutes across campus to class or to parties at night during the cold weather. Take advantage of the warm weather while you can and invest in a warm coat, gloves, scarf, and you will be fine.

Drinking and Marijuana

It's fairly easy at Syracuse to find a party and have unlimited drinks as an undergraduate student. It's no big secret and there isn't a lot of enforcement to stop it either. Another big problem is marijuana which many student use as well. It's also not hard to get and students who use frequently are rarely caught or punished.

Syracuse, NY

The school was built in order to bring up the city. That said, the city is a very destitute area; however, there is an area downtown called The Armory which is similar to a little SoHo filled with little restaurants and boutiques. The state fair is a big deal during the beginning of the year, bringing in citizens from all over New York. We have the Carousel Mall which is considerable big, but the same stores get old after a while. Off campus is very sketchy so be sure to exercise caution. The school basketball team is the heart of the city.
