Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The best way to describe TU's dining options is that they are...an experience. Taylor students' meal plan, which is included in tuition, includes 21 meals every week at the Hodson Dining Commons (DC). Some options for food there include burgers, pizzas, gourmet salads, fresh fruit, and cereal available all day long, and a make-your-own-sandwich deli (all of which are available every day, buffet-style). Beyond that, the DC features a daily entrée prepared before your eyes at "Chef's Counter," with meals ranging from exotic Asian-style dishes to Italian dishes to the infamous "Fat Boy Sandwich" (meatballs, fries, cheese, and marinara sauce on a foot-long sub bun). There's also a global fare line with a different international dish every day and a pasta line, where students can construct their own blend of noodles, vegetables, meats, and sauces, and watch them be grilled into a delectable entrée by a trained professional. In addition, the "Homeward Bound" counter offers a daily homestyle meal.

But for all of its variety, the DC does get old and, tragically, has very little in the way of healthy options. Vegetarians—or even students determined not to ingest much fried food—are forced to get creative very quickly. The DC has other downsides, too. For starters, it's only open at specific times during the week (closed between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., and then again from 2:15 p.m. to 5 p.m.), and the schedule is shrunk on weekends and holidays. If the DC just doesn't cut it, the Grille (Taylor's passable imitation of a fast food restaurant) is open during the week, and features a widened range of options, though it is not included in the meal plan.

Not the Greatest

The food overall is pretty good for a college campus, but we only have one option of where to eat. There is another student dining commons (the Grille) but it's only open to seniors. I wish we had actual restaurants on campus that we could use our meal swipes for. Or I wish that Taylor had some sort of point system, so you could use points for meals you don't eat toward other things, like meals for friends when they come visit, or for stuff at the student bookstore or coffee shop.

Great Variety

Great variety, especially for the size of the student body. the dining commons is not centrally located, however, and so students from Swallow and Sammy have a long trek to get their meals. The Hodson DC is the primary meal site, and it has at least eight different cafeteria lines available, including a made-to-order pasta bar, an international bar, a deli, and a salad bar. All students on campus are required to have a 21 meal plan per week. The Grille (located in the student union) is available for seniors, athletes, and students with a tight lunch schedule.

Food Options at Taylor

The food at the Hudson Dinning Commons if fairly good, could be a little better. As far as variety there are a wide number of options from day to day, but at any given meal the options may not vary largely. If students wish, after their sophomore year or if they live in the Swallow or Sammy dorms, they may get transfers to The Grille which has much better food
