Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It's an unquestionable fact that one of Taylor's most attractive qualities is its dorm life. It's not because the dorms are particularly comfortable or high-end (they aren't—they really aren't), and it certainly isn't that the dorms are full of wild parties and alcohol (they aren't). It's the community.

Students in the dorms often develop strong friendships with their dormmates fast and keep them for a lifetime. Each dorm has, over time, developed a unique and sharply defined personality, and after much prayer, incoming freshmen are assigned to dorms based on survey results. The remarkable thing is that, though this seems like a haphazard way of deciding where students will make lasting relationships, most students stay at the same dorm for their entire college career! In fact, just about everyone will laugh long and hard at the absurd suggestion that they could live anywhere else, even those who live in the "worst dorms on campus." No matter where freshmen end up, there's a fierce sense of belonging and loyalty—almost too much of one. One particular (unfortunate) symptom of the intense dorm devotion is a habit of dismissing anyone from another hall. Fortunately, that attitude is steadily shrinking in popularity, and with every passing year, students develop more and more friendships outside of their dorm.

Get Out of the Dorms Early!

The cost of the housing process is terrible, because they make you live in dorms for three years, and force a complete meal plan on you when you do. Living in the dorms is great as a freshman and sophomore; the community is great! But it is difficult as a junior and senior; college is supposed to teach you independence, and it's difficult to learn in a dorm setting where everything you do is controlled.

Dorm Life Is Invaluable

Taylor has a great dorm life. The rooms are well sized and all necessary furniture is provided. It's a very important experience because you get to live with your classmates which includes upperclassmen.

Available for Rent

Taylor dorms do not have any items for students to rent, but they do include microwaves and vacuum cleaners that students may use at their convenience. Various dorms have their own special perks; in English Hall, for example, students can "rent" baking pans by leaving their ID card at the front desk until they're done using the pan.

Did You Know?
  • This campus stereotype exists: "Guys date girls from Olson, but marry girls from English."
  • The following are the dorm stereotypes: Bergwall is for jocks, English for overachievers who like to bake, Gerig for nerds, Olson for the popular and pretty, Morris for immature/sexist, Swallow Robin for the overlooked, and Wengatz for the preppy.
  • During Wengatz Appreciation Day, guys from Morris layer polos and sweaters, and carry around tennis racquets to display their "esteem" for the sophisticated men of Wengatz.
