Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Get an early start on searching for campus jobs.
  • It is COLD in the winter. Bring a coat!
  • Maintain a good social life, and don't let studying rule your schedule.
  • Stay disciplined.
  • The football team is good.
Tips to Succeed
  • Attend football games.
  • Connect with your wing.
  • Don't become involved in too many things—there are a lot of activities to choose from, and Taylor students tend to overcommit.
  • Don't feel too pressured to attend chapel every time. Sometimes, it's more beneficial to have an extra hour of sleep or studying.
  • Get plugged into whatever is happening on campus. Just because Taylor's located in a rural area doesn't mean the campus isn't involved in current events.
  • Get to know your wingmates quickly, but make time for friends from your classes, clubs, and activities, as well.
  • Open yourself up to your close friends, and don't be afraid to involve yourself in the difficult aspects of each relationship.
  • Plan your schedule in advance and stay on top of your work.
  • Pursue an opportunity to study abroad, whether during a semester, interterm, or spring break. The experience is worth the cost.
  • Study hard and do your best in class.

Faculty

Most are extremely dedicated, not only to their subject but more importantly to their students. They realize that there is a unique story and personality to each individual and are open to developing more meaningful relationships than just a professor you see three times a week.

Intentional Community

Because Taylor is in the middle of nowhere, there is a sense of intentional community. Residence hall dictates most leisure activities. There is a great sense of tradition. As well as fun activities, there are endless opportunities to travel abroad.

Facts

Traditions
  • Airband: Airband is Taylor's annual lip-syncing and choreographed dance competition. The talent bar for auditions is set high, and fans from all over the county and beyond stand in line for hours to get the best seats.
  • Boxer Run: During a snowy night during J-term (interterm), Sammy Morris and Wengatz dorms challenge each other to a boxer run. One dorm runs across campus, while the other tackles them in the snow. Because of frequent injuries, the rules for the boxer run may be tightening.
  • Chapel: Chapel is held three times a week, and students are encouraged but not required to attend. Chapel tends to be a meaningful time of community worship and spiritual growth and refreshment that is necessary to sustain students during their demanding academic semesters.
  • Silent Night: Silent Night is an annual men's basketball game that takes place in December. Fans attend the event in pajamas and remain silent until Taylor's team scores their tenth point.
Urban Legends
  • Students who hang around the bank of Taylor Lake will occasionally hear an enormous splash. Is it just a fish, or an unusually large aquatic creature? While this myth is not a popular one, it may cause some students apprehension about swimming in Taylor Lake.
  • Taylor is rumored to have a network of underground tunnels.
Did You Know?
  • Taylor's theater department is exceptional. Students of any major can audition for the various plays, musicals, and operas that are performed each year. Students should regularly attend a local church while at Taylor, as Taylor does not hold Sunday services on campus. Some local churches offer Sunday school classes that cater specifically to college students, and congregations tend to be generous and welcoming to their college attendees.
  • Taylor was founded in 1846 as a women's college in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It later became a coed university and relocated to Upland. Taylor's Fort Wayne branch closed down after the 2009 academic year. If students need a satisfying evening snack, they can pick up Bosco Sticks (breadsticks stuffed with cheese, pizza sauce, and various toppings) and a Polar Pop at a local gas station.
  • Taylor has its own lake, which is sometimes used for swimming and boating, depending on whether or not a lifeguard is on duty. Students can host cookouts at the nearby fire pit and use the volleyball net for their sport. Taylor offers students many opportunities to be globally engaged through missions work. Lighthouse trips occur during interterm, and spring break trips are another, briefer option. Taylor students can also participate in international internships, if their majors allow it.
