Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Taylor University is situated comfortably in Upland, Ind. If you've never heard of it, don't worry—not many people have, as it's a couple of miles north of Nowhere and just southwest of Totally Unpopulated Wasteland. Upland is a classical sort of small town: Everybody knows everybody (it's not weird to greet random people on the street), and doors are left unlocked. If everyone in Upland were spontaneously transported to the idyllic Midwest settings from 1960's Hollywood movies, no one would notice the difference. It has all of the best clichés of Midwest small towns rolled together, up to and including a local, mom-and-pop ice cream store, Ivanhoe's.

Of course, there is a downside to the small-town atmosphere. There isn't a Starbucks for miles, nor are there establishments like McDonald's, Walmart, or movie theaters within city limits. Shopping for necessities requires at least a 15-minute drive. What, then, are college students to do—especially before Thanksgiving, when freshmen aren't allowed cars? In a word? Everything. The unique environment of Upland forces Taylor students to get creative when it comes to finding fun things to do. Depending on one's dorm, that could mean a late-night guitar session, staying up until dawn talking about everything from philosophy to cooking, or running around campus in your boxers.

Small Town but Feels Like a Home

Upland Indiana, the city Taylor University is in, is very tiny. The university is practivally the whole city. While there is not much to do in the city, the university keeps us busy and we always find fun stuff to do. Two bigger cities are only 20-30 minutes away so we'll get a group and go out for a day or a few hours. Even though there is not much to do the people of Upland seems to enjoy having college students around and are very welcoming. We feel welcome to come attend any communtiy event or church in Upland. Its a great, loving, Christian community.

Not Geared Toward College Students

One thing that is really frustrating about the surrounding community is that nothing is open very late. Students have a lot going on and are probably going to be going to restaurants and coffee shops late at night, but nothing around here is open past 10 or 11. There is maybe one restaurant that is open 24 hours. Other than that, the community is great. They are all friendly; I just wish that there were more options for college students.

Upland= Community

Upland, Indiana is a small town with big benefits. Its a very peaceful town with little to no crime. There are always friends to hang out with from Taylor University, but if you ever want to venture out into a slightly bigger town- head to Marion, IN where there are a few more restaurants and things to do. Never forget there is an amazing ice cream parlor right down the street called Ivanhoe's. It's fantastic.

Did You Know? Upland was founded around the construction of a railroad station in 1867. Twenty years later, it temporarily became a booming town due to a natural gas belt found there. Once the gas boom ended, most of the town left—except for Taylor University, which is partially why Upland is still around today.
