Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There's no way around it: If you plan on being able to leave campus, you'd better bring a car. Taylor's campus is extremely small, and no two points on the main area of campus are more than 15 minutes apart. As such, there aren't a bevy of options for public transportation. Some students apply for permits to drive campus vehicles, but often they are only able to use these with school errands. Since Upland is quite remote, taxis are almost unheard of, and very few places are easily reached on foot. Even a simple trip to Walmart requires a car and 15 minutes of driving. Even more inconvenient, students who return home via airplane (and therefore have no car of their own) need to find a ride for a nearly two-hour journey to Indianapolis.

How to do it? The first option is to utilize the Taylor University shuttle, which drives back and forth to Indianapolis for a fee of $20 per trip, though only around holiday season. But the second (and, the students might say, infinitely better) option is to bum a ride from someone on campus. Taylor students are almost unnaturally accommodating as a rule, and are often more than willing to drive a friend to Walmart or the airport (often because they are driving there anyway). Usually, all they'll ask for in return is a bit of gas money and good company. For students who cannot return home during breaks, faculty and fellow students are often willing to lend house room. That's just how Taylor does things.

Nonexistent

Public transportation is nonexistent due to the small size of the campus. It makes having a car imperative to traveling distances. However, there is not a great need for a car. There are plenty of upperclassmen willing to drive.

Taking the Shuttle

There is hardly any transportation available at Taylor. There is the shuttle that takes students to the airport, but that is only near major holidays.

Salt Please!

Small campus makes for no transportation problems. The only problem I ever have is there not being enough salt on the roads and/or sidewalks during the winter. I cannot tell you how many times I have slipped because there was no salt on the sidewalk on my way to class. Some salt would really help. Please!

Facts

Did You Know?
  • Taylor students are uncommonly friendly and are willing to lend you their cars if you ask. It always helps if you bribe them with a few dollars for gas, too.
  • Taylor's lack of public transportation is just another aspect that adds to the College's pursuit of intentional community. By sharing rides and carpooling, students have greater opportunities to interact, to make friends, and to learn from one another.
