Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Temple University is one of the safest places in Philadelphia. Temple police, city police, and security guards have been working around the clock to keep both Temple and the surrounding community safe. Security guards are posted at the front door of every residence hall and academic building, so if you are not a Temple student or staff member, you are not given access to the building.

If the police don't make you feel safe, then Temple has other safety features, such as the stadium lighting all around campus and the blue-light emergency call-boxes with a reaction time of 60 seconds. In addition to these features, the University also has something on campus that a lot of people call “Temple’s Big Brother"—the more than 200 cameras all over campus (even on top of buildings). So don't do anything on campus that you wouldn’t want recorded. In addition to security services, Temple University has one of the best health service centers for students in the city. Health services fees are included in your tuition, so if you're sick, do not hesitate to stop in and get checked out.

Street Smart

Temple University is located in the heart of North Philadelphia. It is not neighbored by the safest environment, however personally, I have never been in a situation where I was threatened. Many students have had less than average experiences, and often times we have received e-mails from campus security informing us of robberies or burglaries, but this is always going to come with living in a major city. Recently, Temple has started a security bike system. The security guards are now riding through the streets of North Philadelphia around student off-campus housing.

Urban Environment = Obvious Precautions

While on Temple campus, one student can feel very safe, there are surrounding factors that always need to be taken into consideration. Temple police are always there to make sure students are taken care of and remain safe. However, one cannot always feel too safe as the environment around main Campus is not the safest. One great thing is that there are a lot of shuttle buses that take students to where they need to go instead of them having to walk by themselves. The campus always has great lighting and there is always Temple safety on almost every corner.

Great Campus Safety

I was told that there are more police officers on Temple campus than the whole city of Philadelphia. Make sure to take advantage of The Owl Loop is you live off campus. The Owl Loop will take you to your doorstep at any hour of the night to ensure you return home safely.
