Transportation and Study Lounges

Theres is a lot of transportation that takes you from Temple to the city, home, etc. The subway, rail, buses, cabs, and trolleys are perfect for city living because they are cheap and the stops are either on campus or a block off campus

There is a lot of study lounges too, some with computer labs others without: The student center has a laptop lounge, the tech center is all computers. Tuttleman Learning Center has nice study lounges overlooking campus and the city, and it also has a computer lab. Its connected to the library which is very convenient. A lot of the dorms have lounges too and now almost of the dorms have computers in them so instead of running to the library to print something, you can print it in the lobby and run to class.

There's No Place Like Home: Honors Program

My school's honors program provides an opportunity for students to attend small, discussion-based classes while attending a large, urban university. Incoming freshman are invited into the program based off of SAT scores, but students may also apply each semester, and a select number of strong students are welcomed into the program. The honors program community at my school allows students to develop close relationships with professors and other serious students, provides beneficial advising, and notifies students of scholarships and jobs.

Facts

Traditions
  • Bill Cosby speaking at commencement: All graduates look forward to seeing funnyman Bill Cosby speak at their graduation. He’s never a disappointment, and it’s an awesome way to end your time at Temple.
  • Block Parties: Twice a year, areas of campus turn into a giant outdoor party, (e.g., the block parties). The parties consist of food, music, games, and tons of fun.
  • Café jams: The student-run radio station will play music while you dine at the cafeteria. They usually will promote an event that is coming up on campus, as well.
  • Homecoming: Homecoming is a week-long annual event held in October, traditionally used to celebrate the return of the football team, but it is now more geared toward promoting school spirit. Organizations, clubs, and schools set up booths outside the Bell Tower area. There are games, food, and outdoor activities. Other events include a football game, a comedy show, a party, and a skating or bowling party.
  • Probates: If you can find out about them in time, you can see the new Greeks cross. For a viewer, it is a show to watch some good stepping; for the Greeks, it’s more of a rite of passage.
  • Program Board Fair: Interested in joining one of Temple’s most popular and largest organizations? Main Campus Program Board has a fair to recruit new members. This is a good way for freshmen to meet a lot of people and get involved. Members can also get hookups at parties and other events thrown by the organization.
  • Spirit of Philadelphia: Voted one of Temple’s best events, cruising along the Delaware River on the Spirit of Philadelphia is an excellent—not to mention cheap—way to spend an evening. Students can dress up—or not—and party all night on the cruise ship. The party is about $10 for the cruise, transportation to and from the boat, and finger foods.
  • Spring Fling: The Spring Fling is annual event held in April, which has a similar setup to Homecoming. There are week-long events, and booths are set up outside the Bell Tower. There is also usually a party or a dance at the end.
  • Taste of Philly: One of the first events of the semester, Taste of Philly gives students the opportunity to get acquainted with the different dishes Philly has to offer. During the event, the student center is filled with sample foods from different restaurants. Grab a ticket and get it punched to receive the different samples, ranging from Indian cuisine to pizza to Buffalo wings.
Urban Legends
  • Basketball coach John Chaney (who retired as of 2006) may look like an owl, but he is not one, nor is he a cross-breed of one.
  • Many believe that Temple is a five-year university, but it is not. It is possible to graduate within four years.
  • Successful people attend Temple, but never graduate.
  • Temple girls are easy.
  • Yes, the Liacouras Center was once named the Apollo.
