College Prowler Take
Temple University is one of the safest places in Philadelphia. Temple police, city police, and security guards have been working around the clock to keep both Temple and the surrounding community safe. Security guards are posted at the front door of every residence hall and academic building, so if you are not a Temple student or staff member, you are not given access to the building.
If the policy doesn’t make you feel safe, then Temple has other safely features, such as the stadium lighting all around campus, and more then 80 blue-light emergency call boxes with a reaction time of 60 seconds. In addition to those features we also have something on campus that a lot of people call “Temple’s Big Brother”: There are more than 200 cameras all over campus, some even on top of buildings. So I recommend not doing anything on campus that you wouldn’t want recorded.

Security is pretty good; there are campus police all over the place, and I’ve had conversations with people where they talked about how there are a lot of cameras in locations that you wouldn’t even know. I’m not sure how good or bad that is, but you can look at it as there’s always someone able to see if you’re in trouble. |

I actually felt pretty safe on campus. Police were really good about responding to things, and I think it’s much safer than places like UPenn. Ever notice how bad the lighting was there? At Temple, it looked like a stadium. You could see Temple from a plane. UPenn costs like twice as much and has table-lamp lighting. |

I probably sound naïve, but I don’t think a lot of crime happens on campus. You hear about people getting their cars broken into and people getting things stolen from their rooms, but I don’t know, I would think that was a minor issue for Temple. |

Did You Know?
Temple has an escort service, which is a shuttle that takes you from place to place on and off campus from the late afternoon into the night. The shuttle will even take you to some of the parties off campus—not a lot of schools can say that.
A student can become employed by the Temple police staff. Some of those positions include checking IDs at the front of the buildings and driving the night shuttle around campus.
Temple offers a class called Self-Defense for Women, which is taught by a police officer. And at the end of the course, every student is given the chance to beat up a power-puff officer.
