  • Many believe that Temple is a five-year university, but it is not. It is possible to graduate within four years.
  • Successful people attend Temple, but never graduate.

Traditions

  • Band Showcase at Bell Tower - As the weather gets warmer, independent bands can sign up to perform at the Bell Tower.
  • Bill Cosby speaking at commencement - All graduates look forward to seeing funnyman Bill Cosby speak at their graduation. He’s never a disappointment, and it’s an awesome way to end your time at Temple.
  • Block Parties - Twice a year, areas of the campus turn into a giant outdoor party, a.k.a. the block parties. The parties consist of food, music, games, and tons of fun.
  • Café Jams - The student-run radio station will play music while you dine at the cafeteria. They usually will promote an event that is coming up on campus as well.
  • Homecoming - Homecoming is a weeklong annual event held in October, traditionally used to celebrate the return of the football team, but it is now more geared toward promoting school spirit. Organizations, clubs, and schools set up booths outside the Bell Tower area. There are games, food, and outdoor activities. Other events include a football game, a comedy show, a party, and a skating or bowling party.
  • Noontime Diversions - Held every Thursday at noon, Noontime Diversions is a great place where students can compete for prizes. Some of the events are hula-hoop dancing, a wing-eating contest, and dance contests. Besides the competition, students can receive free massages, record a CD, or get a henna tattoo.
  • Probates - If you can find out about them in time, you can see the new Greeks cross. For a viewer, it is a show to watch some good stepping; for the Greeks, it’s more of their right of passage.
  • Program Board Fair - Interested in joining one of Temple’s most popular and largest organizations? Main Campus Program Board has a fair to recruit new members. This is a good way for freshmen to meet a lot of people and get involved. Members can also get hookups at parties and other events thrown by the organization.
  • Spirit of Philadelphia - Voted one of Temple’s best events, cruising along the Delaware River on the Spirit of Philadelphia is an excellent, not to mention cheap, way to spend an evening. Students can dress up, or not, and party all night on the cruise ship. The party is about $10 for the cruise, transportation to and from the boat, and finger foods.
  • Spring Fling - The Spring Fling is the second annual event held in April, which has a similar set up as Homecoming. There are week- long events, and booths are set up outside the Bell Tower. There is also usually a party or a dance at the end.

During the event, the Student Center is filled with sample foods from different restaurants. Grab a ticket and get it punched to receive the different samples, ranging from Indian cuisine to pizza to buffalo wings.

School Spirit

You cannot tell a Temple student that they don’t attend the best college in Philly. Drexel students are a bunch of nerds, and U Penn students are snobs. As far as the other colleges go, they don’t even get mentioned. Temple is very much full of school spirit. From the decorated dorm rooms of Temple paraphernalia to the painted bodies at games, Temple students are proud to be owls. The amazing part of it is that our basketball team isn’t that great, our football team sucks, and no one cares for the cheerleaders. Where does the energy come from? The famous people linked to Temple, like alumni Bill Cosby and former basketball coach John Chaney, usually give students a good amount of pride by positively representing their school. Or maybe it’s just the ever-present love a student has for their university. Almost all students have a Temple sweatshirt, and some also even have a hat, folder, and sweatpants. This is definitely not the school for you if you can’t see yourself loving the cherry and white colors.
