Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

TSU is an HBCU, which makes the dominant ethnic group African American, although TSU is statistically the most ethnically diverse HBCU in the U.S. Some of the students at TSU admit the campus could be more diverse, but the majority feels it is diverse enough. TSU offers a minority scholarship to Caucasians and other minorities in order to help to raise the number of diverse students. There is also a scholarship available for students over 25 years old, which pays for tuition and fees to give the “non-traditional” students a chance to get their education as well. The students at TSU are very tolerant toward one another. Most students respect and befriend the people they meet, and there is generally no animosity between students. Such problems like hate crimes and graffiti do not exist at TSU because the students are more concerned with their social lives and their education. Most students are very pleasant and will smile at you just as you are passing by, although at the start of fall semester everyone seems to be pretty shy and timid. The great thing about TSU is it doesn’t take long for everyone to come out of their shell, and it is very easy to make friends. Most of the student body is very open about their views, and this helps to break any uneasiness one may feel the first few weeks. The best thing to do is be yourself and be proud of who you are, and most students will naturally respect you. Also, remember that respect is given as it is received, so always be respectful to those around you, and you will get along with most everyone.

Diversity

I never intended to go to a Historically Black College or University. My elementary school, middle school and high school were predominantly white, and members of my family encouraged me to branch out and experience racial diversity at a predominantly black university. Honestly, when it came to choosing a college, the racial makeup was my last concern. I wanted to go to a school that would heighten my passion for the Arts and help me to cultivate the skills needed to succeed in the field. The HBCU experience is truly unique and is not for everyone. The camaraderie and vibrancy in student life is one and the same. I made the right decision. Tennessee State University is exactly where I am meant to be. My education reaches far beyond the focus of academics. My professors genuinely care about my future success and what's going on in my life.

Historically Black College

Tennessee State University is predominantly a black college, but in my six semester's there racial diversity has been ramped up. I am a white student and enjoy all different types of cultures, and TSU allows me the opportunity to enjoy this while pursuing a bachelor's degree.
