College Prowler Take

Most dorms at A&M are pretty old, but there are many to choose from in every style and price range, from suites to singles. It’s recommended that you stay on campus your first year, as it helps you meet people and feel more a part of the University. Most students do, and all seem to be very happy with that decision.

A&M is divided into two parts, Northside and Southside. Every person on each side will tell you their side is the best. The dorms on Northside are generally cheaper, and the Northside dwellers, in general, are a close-knit, anti-frat, anti-Corps group. Southside is home to the Corps Dorms and the Commons, which houses a lot of sorority girls. You’ll just have to take a guess about which side you think you’d like best, because they really are very different. Some students room with friends from high school, but others prefer to go “potluck,” or to just have a roommate assigned to them randomly, which is the most common way of getting a roommate. There are benefits with both, but remember it’s easier to get mad at a stranger than your best friend. People always say that rooming with high school friends will ruin your friendship, and more often than not, it’s true.

I would definitely suggest living on campus your first year. I loved it, and I think it was a good experience for me. Now I love living off campus and being on my own.

The Commons are nice. Made up of Mosher, Kruger, Dunn, and Aston Halls, they’re mostly for freshmen. I found I really enjoyed my experience in Mosher. The Commons is the main place on Southside. The modular dorms are really nice, too. They are pretty big and offer private bathrooms. I would suggest either the Commons or a modular dorm. Even the ones with a community bath are pretty nice, but I wanted a bathroom right there by my room. In the Commons, you and your roommate share a pretty big bathroom with two suitemates. Once a week, cleaning people clean the bathrooms in the Commons, which was really nice.

Your first decision when you come...

Your first decision when you come to A&M will be choosing the right dorm, but just as important is choosing between the Northside and Southside dorms.

I’m pretty spoiled and I hate sharing things, so I got a private room. It’s a lot of money, but I love it and the convenience of still being on campus.
