College Prowler Take

College Station is a small city in rural Texas. The town definitely revolves around A&M, and for students coming from large cities, it will take some time to adjust. There’s definitely stuff to do here, but it is limited. If students do get bored—and they will—they can always take a quick road trip to Austin or Houston, both of which are only a couple hours away and offer an endless supply of things to do. The cultural scene in College Station is lacking, but there does seem to be a good music scene. The entire city works around the University’s calendar, especially the athletic events. When there are home football games, it seems like the whole city shuts down to drive to Kyle Field—students wear maroon polos and sport an Aggie flags on their car antennas.

Overall, the town is very conservative. If you drive down George Bush Drive, you’ll pass the Barbara Bush Conference Center on your left, then the Bush School of Government and Public Service—which sits right next to the George Bush Presidential Library. College Station is also located near the Bible Belt. Overall, there is a thick conservative and Christian atmosphere in and around College Station, but it may not be the atmosphere that everyone is looking for. It’s safe to say that people either love or hate College Station.

I miss Houston. I miss my hairdresser that really knows how to cut hair. I miss having an endless amount of options for things to do on a Friday night. I’m not really cut out to live in a small town.

You can walk up to total strangers and start conversations with them. That’s what sold me on going to A&M.

We are pretty much the atmosphere—it’s Aggieland. The town is kind of made up of us. The only other college near by is a community college, Blinn College, in Bryan.

There are not too many places to visit, but Austin is not far, and it provides good entertainment if you need to leave town. There are no other colleges nearby, except Blinn, a local university pretty much made up of all A&M students. It’s a very friendly atmosphere, made to accommodate college students who attend A&M.
