College Prowler Take

Northgate, located just across University on the north side of campus, is the most popular hangout for Aggies, with a plethora of bars and restaurants available on the block. Do yourself a favor: don’t schedule an 8 a.m. class on Friday mornings, because, at A&M, the weekend starts on
Thursday nights.

Besides Northgate, there are some popular country western places like Harry’s and the Hall, but there are not many other types of clubs. You need to learn to two-step if you come here. This is the Deep South, and entertainment in College Station often involves country western dancing. While people are always out drinking and having fun, you might get bored if you keep going to the same handful of places you’ll find in town. Once you’ve been here a while, you might like to broaden your horizons and check out the nightlife in Houston or Austin. They aren’t too far away, and they offer a world of possibilities outside College Station. No matter how long you’ve been here, there’s always something new and fun to do, and there’s plenty of debauchery to participate in.

Off-campus, College Station is like a medium-sized town. It’s got a club called the Texas Hall of Fame, which everyone calls the Hall. It’s like a huge dance hall, bar, and club combined. It’s really big, and they alternate between sets of country and rap songs. The transition is good, and you’ll see people of all kinds there that like all kinds of music. Northgate, right across from campus, is a string of several bars and clubs. You can park and just walk the strip, going in and out of places. Northgate is a blast. Austin is about an hour and a half away, so we’ve taken a couple of road trips down there. It’s such a blast to go to 6th Street. They have tons of clubs and bars there.

You will get busted for an MIP [minor in possession] if you go out and try to drink underage. There are cops everywhere on Northgate, and most of them are undercover at the bars just waiting to nail you.

I just turned 20, but if you’re lucky, you might be able to get a couple of drinks here and there. The Chicken, Fitzwilly’s, Big Pauly’s, and the Hole are all good places to try.

Dixie Chicken is a popular bar. I don’t party all the time, but Hurricane Harry’s is a good place; it’s also very popular.

The bars and clubs are good, but it just depends on what you like. The biggest night of the week is Thursday. The Tap is probably the most popular place to go on Thursday because of the drink specials.

What to Do if You're Not 21

Underage students can study, play pool, go to the park, participate in ice blocking, attend athletic events, go to Hurricane Harry’s, hang at Sweet Eugene’s coffee shop, go to concerts at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater, chill at Lake Bryan, go mountain biking, go to the movies, check out an art galleries, take Aggie Wrangler lessons (country-western dance), drive or walk through Santa’s Wonderland, knock down some pins at Wolf Pen Bowling Center, go mini-golfing, or, if you have absolutely nothing to do, try cow-tipping.
