Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

During the day, you will see A&M students busy with classes and studying, but once the moon goes up, it’s a different story. Northgate, located just across University Drive on the north side of campus, is the most popular night-time hangout spot for Aggies—the area has plenty of bars and restaurants. Besides Northgate, there are some popular country western places, such as Harry’s and the Hall, but there are not many other types of clubs. At A&M, it’s all about the two-step, since the preferred type of music is country (remember, this is the Deep South!).

No matter how long you’ve been here, there’s always something new and fun to do, and there’s plenty of debauchery to participate in. If you do start to get bored, though, you can broaden your horizons and check out the nightlife in Houston or Austin. These cities aren’t too far away, and they offer a world of possibilities outside College Station. Regardless of where you prefer to go out, just do yourself a favor and don’t schedule an 8 a.m. class on Friday mornings because at A&M, the weekend starts on Thursday nights.

Northgate: the Drinking and Clubbing Hotspot

Northgate (located across the northern gate of campus) has a nice variety of clubs and bars. While the bars are strict on carding, 18-20 year olds are allowed in the clubs and bars. They just can't drink. The majority of the clubs and bars in the area have a western theme, so it is nearly mandatory to own a pair of cowboy boots. ALso, prepare to be overwhelmed by country music.

Despite the fact that the drinking hotspots are all so close to campus, Texas A&M University is not a "party school." Parties typically are not as easy to find in comparison to its rival schools. However, people are very friendly and there is still much to do.

Club Crawler

The clubs in town offer a wide variety of places to go out.

Bar Prowler

Nightlife here does tend to seem kind of cowboy-oriented, but A&M students are predominantly the people out at the clubs and bars at night, and there is always something going on.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Salty Dog

Salty Dog is one of the popular non-Northgate bars. It's just a normal bar with good drink specials—usually $1 wells and $1 Jello shots. There’s an upstairs place to sit and chill, and the bar downstairs is cool, as well. Dress is casual.

The Texas Hall of Fame

A music venue, bar, and dance hall, the Texas Hall of Fame (or "The Hall" for short) is an especially popular Thursday night destination. Drinks are 75 cents and pitchers are $2.50 until 11 p.m. The Hall features three bars, pool tables, foosball, and darts.

Hurricane Harry’s

Harry’s, a country western bar with nightly drink specials and dancing, is right next to campus, down the street from Northgate. The most popular night there is Thursdays. Harry's is close to IHOP, so a lot of people eat there after Harry’s closes to sober up and wrap up their evening.

Big Pauly’s

A bar and music venue, Big Pauly’s features weekly musical events, both live music and DJs. The place may seem small and somewhat cramped during bigger shows, but this just adds to the personal atmosphere. The cover charge varies depending upon the size of the event, so check beforehand.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Underage students can study, play pool, go to the park, participate in ice blocking, attend athletic events, go to Hurricane Harry’s (it’s 18-and-over), hang at Sweet Eugene’s coffee shop, go to concerts at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater, chill at Lake Bryan, or go mountain biking. They can also go to the movies, check out an art gallery, take Aggie Wrangler lessons (country-western dance), drive or walk through Santa’s Wonderland, knock down some pins at Wolf Pen Bowling Center, go mini-golfing, or, if they have absolutely nothing to do, cow-tipping.
