College Prowler Take

There aren’t many options for on-campus dining at TCU, though most are appetizing. The cafeteria-style Market Square, 1873 Grill and Cafe, and Sub Connections offer a bit of variety for a short time, but they tend to get boring in the long run. Some groceries are available at the Corner Store, and there is Albertson's within walking distance. The food tends to be overpriced, and it is easy to lose interest in the selection within a semester, but everyone seems to have a favorite.

Despite the limited hours of operation, most students are satisfied with the dining options here. Those who are not pleased with the food attribute their dissatisfaction to two key factors: the food is expensive, and the selection is limited.

The food at the Brown Lupton...

The food at the Brown Lupton University Union (BLUU, pronounced "Blue") is better than most colleges I've been to. However, it can get kind of old, so just mix it up. I wouldn't buy a huge meal plan; it's a waste of money

The dining hall is pretty nice....

The dining hall is pretty nice. The food is great, but you will get sick of the same thing everyday. Thank the lord that we have frog bucks. There are like 10 options within 5 minutes of school to use the frog bucks that you get along with your meal plan. 1873 is always a good choice for the drunk munchies.

The food in the BLUU/Market Square...

The food in the BLUU/Market Square (the main cafeteria) is better than the food at other school I've visited, but honestly that isn't saying much. Usually I can find something I like, but once or twice a week I end up eating out instead. Outside of Market Square the best places are definitely Dutch's, Potbelly's, and Fuzzy's Taco Shop. My advice would be to buy a lot of Frog Bucks; you are going to need them.

What Good Are Options If the Food Isn't Any Good?

C

The main dining hall (Market Square) always has things like subs, pizza, burgers and fries, omelets, and a salad bar. There are two stations which serve varying dishes (homestyle American food and attempts at international food). In addition, they always have vegetarian food at lunch (hummus on pita bread, tabbouleh, and one or two varying menu items). There is a multitude of drink options for even the pickiest of palates. There are also desserts with every meal. Personally, I find most of the food as either too bland or too out-there. The chefs seem to have a penchant for adding onion and garlic to nearly every dish, even when it's unnecessary. I once found pieces of onion in my corn - why??? Campus Cash dining dollars can be used to buy Starbucks coffee downstairs in the Union or in the library. They can also be used to purchase food at a sports grill, sub place, and smoothie place. Freshmen and sophomores must live on campus and purchase the unlimited meal plan. Many upperclassmen choose the limited meal plan, and I don't blame them.

There is no healthy food on campus. If you don’t want to gain the Freshman 15, I would suggest either having a car and working out a lot, or finding someone who does and becoming their best friend.

Did You Know?

TCU offers Silver, Gold, and Platinum meal plans. Each plan gives you unlimited access to Market Square and a certain amount of Campus Cash and Frog Bucks depending on which plan you choose. Flex plans with limited meal swipes are also available for students who live off campus.

Frog Bucks can be used on and off campus, and you can add more to your account with a credit card through the TCU Web site. All forms of money left in the account from fall semester rolls over for spring semester and gets added on, but at the end of the spring semester all of the excess money becomes the property of TCU.
