Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Texas Tech has a diverse campus with a mix of blondes and brunettes, big city kids and small town folks, and men and women. However, Tech is lacking when it comes to ethnic diversity. Nearly 80 percent of the new freshman in 2006 were Caucasian. Stats much like this one can be found in the years prior to 2006, making ethnic diversity on the Tech campus a trend that may not be catching on anytime soon.

Having a mix of students from different parts of the U.S. brings different ideas and cultures to a campus. This diversity adds more to the college learning experience than does ethnic diversity alone, but sadly, Tech seems to be lacking in this area as well. In 2006, the number of enrolled Tech students who were from Texas beat out the number of international and out-of-state students by over 20,000 people. But with all of these Texans comes a lot of Texas pride, and that pride does help to create a more unified campus.

Racisim

One draw back to Texas tech is there is an abundance of racism. I find it shocking how racism is still so relevant in to-days society. This may be due to the school's location in west Texas, which is widely associated with being home to an abundance of racism.

Lots of White Students

Lots of White students make up the student body with Hispanics and Asians coming in second place. Very few Black students on campus.

Texas Tech

Texas Tech University is in a very racially diverse town; however the campus is not as diverse as the town: there are mostly white students. The college itself is very accepting of all races, regardless of the white majority. I love being a Red Raider!

Facts

Gay Pride

Lubbock does have a gay community with a few gay nightclubs/bars, but for the most part, the gay community doesn’t make a big statement around town.

Political Activity

Most students are conservative because their parents are conservative. Students will wear cotton T-shirts showing their political stance, but there is little knowledge or action that backs up these bold claims.

Economic Status

Tech students predominantly come from middle-class backgrounds.

Most Common Religions

Christianity and Judaism are the most popular religions.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Organizations can claim the multicultural classification when they register their group with Texas Tech. Out of the over 400 student organizations on the Tech campus, a little over 30 groups have this multicultural or international classification.
