College Prowler Take
Texas Tech has a diverse campus with a mix of blondes and brunettes, big city kids and small town folks, and men and women. However, Tech is lacking when it comes to ethnic diversity. Nearly 80 percent of the new freshman in 2006 were Caucasian. Stats much like this one can be found in the years prior to 2006, making ethnic diversity on the Tech campus a trend that may not be catching on anytime soon.
Having a mix of students from different parts of the U.S. brings different ideas and cultures to a campus. This diversity adds more to the college learning experience than does ethnic diversity alone, but sadly, Tech seems to be lacking in this area as well. In 2006, the number of enrolled Tech students who were from Texas beat out the number of international and out-of-state students by over 20,000 people. But with all of these Texans comes a lot of Texas pride, and that pride does help to create a more unified campus.

Lubbock is in the Bible Belt; therefore, we are mainly Christian, middle class, Caucasian, and very conservative. But this is not true for the entire student population at Texas Tech University. |

It’s a very big school, and there are all different types of people here. It is West Texas, though, and there are some very conservative people here. A lot of the students are kids from small towns. |

Statistically, Lubbock is one of the most conservative towns in the Union, including the Bible Belt! Diversity? What is that, an old wooden ship? If you want to be heard, hang around the hippie hangout KTX (the student-run radio station). That’s where the bunker of hippie propagandists try to infiltrate the jacked up trucks riding around town. They also play great music that hasn’t been ruined by pop culture production companies. |
Facts
Economic Status
Tech students predominantly come from middle-class backgrounds.
Gay Pride
Lubbock does have a gay community with a few gay nightclubs/bars, but for the most part, the gay community doesn’t make a big statement around town.
Minority Clubs on Campus
Organizations can claim the multicultural classification when they register their group with Texas Tech. Out of the over 400 student organizations on the Tech campus, a little over 30 groups have this multicultural or international classification.
Most Common Religions
Christianity and Judaism are the most popular religions.
Political Activity
Most students are conservative because their parents are conservative. Students will wear cotton T-shirts showing their political stance, but there is little knowledge or action that backs up these bold claims.
