Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Lubbock is a small town, and therefore Greek life is a huge part of the Texas Tech social scene. There are 11 sororities and more than 10 fraternities who have lodges on Greek Circle, and these are the ones that have the most social functions throughout the year. Especially for freshman who can’t go to bars, fraternity parties are the place to be on the weekend. There is at least one fraternity party going on every day of the weekend during the fall semester, and these parties range anywhere from being a refined dance party with a band to a foam party with a DJ and random costumes galore. Fraternity parties are random in venue and theme, but they usually have one thing in common: drinking. It is not uncommon to see people making-out in the foam or throwing up in it. Girls are always welcome, but only guys in that particular fraternity are usually allowed in.

Sorority functions are the opposite of fraternity functions because they are all date parties. Dates must be signed up, and most sororities make it mandatory to take a provided shuttle to and from the party. Drinking is not allowed for anyone under 21 because there is a third-party vendor who checks IDs, and the overall party feels like a high-school dance. Unlike the Greek life at other schools, no one lives at the lodge provided by their respective fraternity or sorority. This plays a huge part in the dwindling of involvement of students in Greek life after their sophomore year.

Dumb Networking Life

The Greek community is very popular here, and so if your not in the greek community your seen as an outsider or inferior to most people. I think that the greek system is just a reason for everyone to think more highly of theirselves.

Greek Life at Tech

If you fit into stereotypes and can stand to look like everyone else then Greek Life is for you. Rules and regulations are enforced immensely and participation in almost every event is required. It is very time consuming but in the end there are great business ties and lifelong friendships that can be made.
