Social Scene
The social scene at Tech changes with each year you call Lubbock home. Freshman and sophomore years are dominated by house parties and frat parties, but come junior and senior years, the bars see new faces and lots of them. Girls usually start the night with girls, and guys with guys, making the initial run-ins at the bar much more fun, but everyone is well-mixed at the after-party around 2 a.m. Besides hanging out at night, guys and girls at Tech take advantage of the daylight and usually spend it together. At most schools, students can fall into the routine where girls and guys only hang out after hours, but in a town where you make your own fun, good company is a must-have, and Tech has it.
Hookups or Relationships?
With Tech students, especially freshman, first dates usually come after first kisses if they ever happen at all. When the only thing separating 18-year-old men and women is a foyer or a stairwell, hook-ups will inevitably ensue. In a school over 20,000 students you would think that there would be enough girls and guys for each person to have their own mate, but the reality is that Tech is full of attractive people, and one man's ex is another man's treasure. As you move out of the dorms and into a real-life living situation, relationships make a little more sense, and hooking up with one person is more appealing than hooking up with several. You can have a great college experience without seriously dating anyone, but it is definitely worth it when you get a good one.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
Lubbock is a college town, so meeting guys and girls is almost impossible to avoid. Walking to class, sitting in class, strolling through the grocery store, working out, walking around the dorms, eating at the Market-you name the activity, and more than likely you can and probably will run into someone you know or want to get to know. The best way to meet people is to get involved in something. Whether you go Greek, go to church, go to a bar, or any combination of the three, as long as you are out and about, you are bound to find a friend.
Dress Code
The dress code in Lubbock is "anything goes." None of the bars or local hangouts have dress codes, and flip-flops will fly at even the nicest restaurants. However, girls and guys like to go out looking good. Guys should bring their button-downs and khakis, and girls their stilettos and favorite flirty dresses. Going to class, though, is a different story for students. During the day, members of either sex wearing anything but a T-shirt will get looks that are both good and bad.
