Quick Stats

School Slang
  • BA : The business building.
  • The DT: The Daily Toreador, the daily campus newspaper.
  • Elite: Very cool.
  • eRaider: The electronic ID system students access through a user name and password.
  • Fratty : Doing things that would be considered not cool if they weren’t being done by a boy in a fraternity (e.g., wearing a pink shirt, short shorts, and an ugly ‘80s hat).
  • Guns up : Making gun signs with one’s hands; a signal raised high in the air by fans at all Tech sporting events.
  • Lady Raiders: Members of the Texas Tech women’s basketball team.
  • Meat out : When a person, usually a guy, explodes in fury or excitement and raises his voice to the point of obnoxiousness.
  • Munsen: Platonic group napping.
  • Party Pics: Professional pictures that are taken during parties by hired photographers.
  • Raider Card : This is like a debit card you can use anywhere on campus, including the Rec Center, Starbucks in the SUB, Barnes and Noble, the Rawls Golf Course, and Student Health Services.
  • RaiderGate: Tech-sponsored tailgate outside of the Stangel/ Murdough complex.
  • Raiderland: Lubbock
  • Rec : Robert H. Ewalt Recreation Center.
  • SGA: Student Government Association. This is like student council or government in high school, but they have a lot more pull around campus, and they must go through a tough recruiting process.
  • Shack: To spend the night with someone (happens a lot in the dorms).
  • Stacks: The top floors of the library where books are stored in large stacks and students can study in quiet cubicles.
  • TechSis : Once logged into an eRaider account, students can review grades, schedule classes, and manage their Tech careers through this service.
  • USA: The United Spirit Arena.
  • Victory Lap : A student’s fifth year in college.
  • Walk: To attend graduation and walk across the stage to receive your diploma.
  • Walk of Shame: Walking across the lobby in your outfit from the night before. A great walk of shame is from Weymouth to Chitwood, or even better, Murdough to Stangel—that way you get to walk through the market when everyone is eating lunch.
  • Wells : The cheapest hard liquor that is served at a bar. These are the ones that are usually on special.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Live in a house. Apartment contracts are very tight. Once you are in one, there is no getting out.
  • Research different majors before you choose. You don’t have to pick a major or even have a major in mind when you come to Tech.
  • You don’t always need to buy the textbook for a class. Wait until the class gets going, and then see if you need to spend the money.
Tips to Succeed
  • Go to class.
  • If you are going to go through sorority or fraternity rush at Tech, do it as a freshman, because it is much harder to get accepted as a sophomore.
  • Live near campus so it is easier for you to go to class.

Better in Texas

Though Texas Tech is certainly not perfect, the number of gentlemen here is a definite step-up on the place I came from. Guys actually hold doors open for you and don't try to pull off as many stupid moves as I've seen in other places. Maybe it's just Texas - maybe it's Texas Tech. Tech also has a really wonderful nursing school that I'm looking forward to which has great ratings and knowledgeable professors. The University hospital is also really convenient and easy to get to when needed and should be a great place to learn.

Good

I love Tech. But some of the teachers and some of the students are very stuck up. The facility (not including the teachers) are VERY helpful and very willing to go out of there way to make sure your problems are taken care of.

Facts

Traditions
  • Arbor Day: This is a new tradition at Tech which celebrates National Arbor Day. During the final weeks of the spring semester, students meet at Memorial Circle in the center of campus to enjoy nature. Everyone helps plant trees and greenery around campus while listening to a band, enjoying refreshments, and appreciating Lubbock’s underappreciated landscape.
  • Carol of Lights: This tradition, which has been in existence since 1959, takes place each year during the entire month of December. A lighting ceremony brings thousands of students and people from the Lubbock community out to listen to carols, a band, and most importantly, to see the entire campus light up with red, white, and yellow Christmas lights.
  • The Goin’ Band from Raiderland: The Goin’ Band from Raiderland took the field back in 1925 at the first football game Tech ever played. This band doesn’t just walk onto the field, they march in a way that looks like they are running. The band travels to all of the games with the team and brings a ton of team spirit with them.
  • Guns Up: This is the Tech hand sign that students raise high into the air to show their loyalty and love for the school.
  • Homecoming: This is a big event every fall during football season that is celebrated with a bonfire, a parade, a pep rally, the crowing of a homecoming queen and king, and of course, a football game. Fraternities, sororities, and other campus organizations prepare for homecoming by building floats, hosting events, and raising support for their king and queen nominees. Homecoming is primarily a tradition for alumni to enjoy, but current students have no problem celebrating with them.
  • RaiderGate: This is a huge tailgate for which a band is hired to play, and it is held in a parking lot on campus. Trucks buy tickets to the lot, set up grills and kegs, and everyone hangs around for about three to four hours before the game. There are a lot of Greek-affiliated tailgates at RaiderGate, but they are not the only ones present.
  • Saddle Tramps: This is a student spirit organization at Tech that has been a part of the University since 1936. It is traditionally an all-male group that takes the field to ring bells before the players come out.
  • Tortilla Tossing: During football games, students, although they are not supposed to, will throw tortillas onto the field. The connection between tortilla-tossers and Texas Tech comes down to the school’s “Double T” logo.
Urban Legends
  • If a girl leaves Tech a virgin, Roy Rogers (the statue in the front of campus) will get off of his horse.
  • The only thing to do in Lubbock is drink and party.
