  1. Lubbock was named for the founder of the Texas Rangers, Thomas S. Lubbock, in 1876. His brother was the governor of Texas during the Civil War.
  2. Lubbock is nicknamed the "Hub City" because it is surrounded by five major highways, and it resembles the hub of a wagon wheel.
  3. Lubbock is the 11th largest city in Texas.
  4. Lubbock is part of the Llano Estacado, which is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world.
  5. In 1951, Lubbock was home to one of the nation's most famous UFO sightings—a photograph (taken by a Tech student, incidentally) of a V-shaped formation of lights now known as the "Lubbock Lights."
