Majors at Texas Tech

I am very happy with my major choice of Finance so far. All of my classes have been very interesting and challenging, and i would do it all over in a heart beat. My goals with my degree are to become a stoke broker or investment banker. The only concern I have with finding a job is the amount of people hiring in this economy.

Tech Food Scene

Off campus dining options at tech are staggering. Texas Tech is located in Lubbock, which is one of the bigger west Texas towns so it is home to all kinds of different food types. Lubbock has all the basic cheap fast food places along with nicer places like steak houses. There are also all kinds of ethnic foods from Greek, to Vietnamese so any taste can be satisfied.

Texas Tech

Texas Tech boys and girls are surprisingly really nice people. Tech seems to have the stigma of where if you're not in a sorority/fraternity then you're no one. That really isn't true, everyone is friends with everyone.

Better in Texas

Though Texas Tech is certainly not perfect, the number of gentlemen here is a definite step-up on the place I came from. Guys actually hold doors open for you and don't try to pull off as many stupid moves as I've seen in other places. Maybe it's just Texas - maybe it's Texas Tech. Tech also has a really wonderful nursing school that I'm looking forward to which has great ratings and knowledgeable professors. The University hospital is also really convenient and easy to get to when needed and should be a great place to learn.

Diversity

There are tons of student organizations for all races, religions, cultures, interests, sexual orientation etc. Most people are still white, middle-class, Americans, but I haven't noticed any discrimination or poor treatment against students of other cultures. Overall, there seems to be a fairly diverse student populous and definitely lots of ways to learn about other cultures and such - doesn't mean that people necessarily take those opportunities, but they're there.

Texas Tech University Is Wonderfully Diverse

As a whole, I feel Texas Tech University is very diverse. We've got a little of everything, and that is a great thing! I'm not a judgemental person who comes from a very small town so coming to Texas Tech and being submitted to all these different ways of life is nothing short of magnificent for me. Everyone has their own backgrounds and opinions and others respect that. In my opinion, that's how a university should be!

A new dorm was just built with an entire new dining facility. Living on campus is awesome if you live in an updated dorm. Some of the dorms on campus are in need of a make over. Other than this fact, everything about living on campus is an A+!

Fun Crimes?

It seems to me that campus police are EXTREMELY strict. Alcohol policies are strict, for good reason. The punishment for any code violation is severe after your first offense, but it for everyone's safety and well-being.

Cheap Appartments!!

There a numerous off-campus housing locations, such as 25twenty, Raiders Pass, Raiders Park, The Grove, The Village at Overton Park and many others! They are all relatively inexpensive and the security is great! Parking isn't too bad as well.

Food of Lubbock

There is a plethora of off-campus dinning options that include various multicultural dinning options, popular fast-food restaurants, and a large variety of casual and formal dine-in restaurants. Many places take student discounts, and everywhere I have been has been relatively inexpensive and very customer satisfactory! I honestly would recommend the multicultural places like It's Greek to Me, and Mediterranean Grille, and so many others!

Great Computers in the Art Department

I spent all of my time in the Art department where there are a couple of different computer labs with 5-10 high quality computers each for general access. They close early so if you often need computer access in the evening, it is better to have your own.

Local Attractions in Lubbock

While people may complain there isn't much to do in Lubbock, if you honestly take a look at what they do in their home towns vs. Lubbock, it probably isn't much different. Lubbock is the fast food capital of America; there are several large movie theaters; a decent sized mall; a mile long list of quality restaurants (college budget and higher); concerts do actually come to Lubbock to the United Spirit Arena on campus (Taylor Swift, News Boys, Tran-Siberian Orchestra to name only a few over the last 3 months; there are nice parks with hiking/biking trails; bowling; bars (its a college town- there are tons of clubs and bar). The bottom line is that there is plenty to do in Lubbock, much more than what was just listed. Sometimes you just have be creative, or realize you wouldn't be doing anything much more exciting at home anyways. It's not NYC or Dallas, but it has everything any other town of 300,000 people would have.

Plenty of Girls

There are a lot of attractive girls that go to Tech. It really just boils down to finding the ones that interest you based on their personalities. The guys on the other hand are ridiculous, in my opinion. Most of them are involved in greek life and walk around campus like their s*** doesn't stink. They all dress like they got dressed in the dark, and do whatever they can to be something they are not. But then again, I am a straight guy, so my opinion on that subject is a bit biased.

Upperclassman Dorms Are Best

Living on campus isn't that bad. For a first year student, you're able to learn about others and you start your jouney in the dorms. It's easier when you have a very spread out schedule and for studying. If you need to stop by the library it's just a small walk, you don't need to get in a car or anything. For girls, I would live in Horn/Knapp just because it's more spacious.

Overall Experience at Texas Tech University

Experience

So far my experience has been alright. I have not met many people, because most are either Greek or they simply have their specific friends that they associate with already. I understand that though. College is not like high school where everyone knows everyone and all the people are alike and hangout with whomever. It's diverse and the social atmosphere in many aspects, but not all, is much more mature. This school has much to offer academically which is why I go here and I plan to stay until I have accomplished all that I plan to. The staff is helpful and I have generally had a good educational experience so far, about which I cannot complain. I love Texas Tech for what it is as a University and I have much respect for what it stands for. I am very far from home, and there are many people here that are nothing like me or the types of people I am used to being around. In my opinion there are many students here who seem to have their heads a little higher than others and look down their nose, and if they aren’t like this from what I have seen everyone else keeps to themselves. I have had a few encounters with some very rude girls who live near me, but I am not moved by their antics, because that is just a distraction I will continually run into throughout life. I am here for an education and I am not worried about much else. So I would say despite the rough encounters I have had I still have a goal in sight that Texas Tech will help me reach as long as I do not lose focus. Overall it has been a good experience and I hope my experiences here will continue to be good in the future.

On-Campus Living

I feel that it is especially good for freshman to live on campus, because the dorms are conveniently placed, and it makes getting to class much easier than if they were to live off campus. For the cost of living on campus at Tech I feel that there is a lot to offer and the food choices are great. Much is included in the fees and such for going to school here. I enjoy living right next to the rec and near the stadiums and arenas, because the games are fun, and being here they are much easier to get to, plus at no extra cost to me. The hardest part of living on campus is being near people who constantly like to party and do things that are very distracting and many people stay up late and make lots of noise. I usually get to bed early, but living with a roommate who I do not have much in common with and that was chosen for me, makes that difficult because she likes to stay up late and is very inconsiderate of me. She makes lots of noise when I try to rest and has people in and out of the room constantly. For what I pay to live here that has been the biggest issue, so I would suggest trying to match people up a little more closely. Aside from that, Tech is a great school with much to offer on campus, and off campus there are lots of local businesses that are close by. All in all, it is convenient and safe. There are parts of town that are not the greatest, but living on campus I don't have to worry about my things being stolen or my vehicle being messed with. The security is admirable and they do the best they can to protect all of the residents and students on campus, from driving (speed limits and other laws) to controlling who can or cannot enter the dorm halls. It’s a good experience all together with its up and downs as all things in life have.

Girls Girls Girls

Texas Tech has a ton of good looking girls. That could be the end of my short answer, but it's not. The girls are friendly for the most part, know how to have a good time, and somewhat smart. Not saying that all girls are stupid, but some of them that go here don't even know they are at college. And the guys suck. Well... Just the frat guys. Because they have money to pay for friends lets them think they are better than everyone else. Oh well, I'm trying to pay for an education, not friends.
