Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town Car, bike, bus, taxi, or walking
Best Ways to Get to the Airport The Lubbock airport is a mere 7.4 miles from campus. The best way to get there is to have a friend drop you off and pick you up. It will only take 15 minutes out of their day at most. Parking at the airport is also an option. Republic Parking: (806) 741-0328 Airport Parking: (806) 775-2035 www.flylia.com/Parking.htm

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The bus system in Lubbock exists, but students generally take the buses that run solely on campus or the ones that drop people off at certain apartment complexes around town. You need to have a ride to get pretty much anywhere in Lubbock because although it is a small town, it is spread out. If you have the means to have your own car, consider yourself blessed. Lubbock is not the place to try your hand at “going green.”

When it comes to the cabs in Lubbock, carry your pepper spray and go with a friend. Safe Ride is a Texas Tech service that provides students with a ride home from anywhere in Lubbock for free with a student ID. This service is open to all students, not just the intoxicated ones. The problem with this service is that the cab drivers who are taking you home don’t get paid by you, and therefore they are, for the most part, very rude. You will see cabs around Lubbock, but this is not a city where cabs can be hailed from the street corner. When you are looking to get out of Lubbock or you are picking up a visitor, the airport is less than 10 miles away.

Transportation in Lubbock

Transportation here on campus is very accessible and it's free! Many people live off-campus and there are shuttles that will transport students directly from their apartments to campus.

I'd Rather Walk to Class

There are buses that run fairly often and cover a good amount of campus. Off campus permits are moderately difficult and expensive to obtain, and are far from campus. There are a few bus routes that travel to off campus apartments that are included in either rent or tuition. Overall, it's decent, but it's more convenient to walk.

Options?

Unfortunately the only options for transportation around campus are your legs, a bicycle, and the ever dreadful bus system. The bus system is terribly inconvenient only because it takes longer to stop at every bus stop than to actually walk to your class. Even though the bus system is included in our tuition, I would rather walk in the rain for five minutes than ride the dreadful 20 minute ride on the bus.
