Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Wind is constant in the South Plains, and Lubbock is in the heart of it. Red dirt is another feature of this area, and when the wind gets a hold of it, it is close to impossible to walk outside without coming back in with a mouthful of it. But, that dirt-flinging wind is also what makes Lubbock’s summers unbeatable. The wind keeps the temperatures bearable and makes going outside the highlight of any day. It’s a safe bet that the large number of daytime parties at Tech are due to the large number of good-weather days we get. There is very little rain here, but when it does rain, all the news stations call a tornado warning, and it becomes a huge event. Make sure to bring your galoshes for these rain days because Lubbock has a huge problem with drainage—and that problem is that there aren’t any drains. Even a light rain means flooding all around Lubbock and on the TTU campus. During the winter, snow is not uncommon. The snow isn’t bad, but Lubbock’s wind paired with icy snow is never a recipe for a fun walk to class.

When you are packing you should pack it all, because Lubbock’s weather is unpredictable. For those nice days, make sure you have the uniform for walking to class: flip-flops, a T-shirt, and shorts. A heavy coat and a windbreaker are must-haves when battling Lubbock’s winter, but make sure you look good in your layers. A snow storm or a dust storm is just another reason to miss class and throw a house party.

Hot and Dusty

The occasional dust storm can make walking to class a real pain, and it gets super hot in the months surrounding the summer. The fall and winter is pretty mild here, with a few snow days here and there.
