The New School Is Exciting – I just started here, at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, but I feel like I belong. I'm in a community of musicians that work hard and are creative, and I'm surrounded by a larger community of artists, intellectuals and survivors. I say survivors because in New York, you sometimes have to fight to survive the cold, the fast-paced environment, and the expensive living costs. But despite that, New Yorkers survive because they are striving to accomplish their dreams in a place where those dreams are attainable.
The New School for Jazz is unique in that it offers private instrument lessons and provides access to a plethora of teachers throughout New York. If you pass proficiency, you can CHOOSE your teacher from that plethora (it's in list form) and even request to add a teacher of your choice to the list! The cost of the lessons is included in the tuition, so you're not having to pay whatever famous teacher the $200 or so they normally charge per lesson!
The workload at New School is a lot, mostly because as a musician, you have to practice!! But it's a fun workload, for the most part. Depending on where your strengths lie, certain classes will take more time than others. For me, music theory is the most difficult, so I spend a lot of my time working on homework for that class. For others, it's performance, or something else.
The teachers, counselors and administration are caring people, across the board. They will take extra time to work with you or talk to you about a problem if you need it!
The students who do well are the confident go-getter types. It's best to take on that stereotypical New York attitude if you want to do well at New School. Audition for EVERYTHING. Otherwise, you'll be passing up opportunities for success!

Combat the Cold – It is hard to get used to the weather in the East Coast, period. But if you're excited to be in New York and at The New School, you get over it! Make sure you have warm, comfortable clothing and LOTS of layers. A big, warm jacket is a must. The longer, the better. If you just stay positive through the winter and grow some tough skin, you'll be fine! It's such an amazing experience to be in New York that it is totally worth it.

New York is alive at night, as everyone knows. The parties, the music, the fun - they go on all day and all night. New School, because it's full of artists of all kinds, has parties all the time. It's easy to find them... just make friends and you'll be set. Clubbing is expensive, so if you can afford it, go ahead! But The New School is a very pricy school and so is living in New York, so most students stick to parties. Parties here are a mix of classes and ages, but freshmen seem to go a bit more crazy than upperclassmen. It is very easy to get too into the partying scene and forget about your studies and waste money, so be careful!

The New School - in the Heart of Manhattan – Because The New School is in the heart of Manhattan, New York, students have an overwhelming amount of options for fun, outside-of-school activities. Each branch of The New School is artistic, and New York is booming with art galleries, film showings, fashion shows, poetry readings, dance performances, and more. And of course, the music scene in New York is unrivaled. Students at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music are lucky because we have so much inspiration all around us. There are multiple music shows going on every night, on practically every street in Manhattan. These provide prime opportunities to learn from listening to and watching professional musicians. However, they can also be opportunities to over spend. The shopping is also a dangerous distraction, but there are plenty of thrift shops that have great selections for those who like to shop! New York is full of all types of people, and locals are very welcoming students and others who are new to the city. If you even look like you're lost, someone will usually come up to you and help you find your bearings. Overall, while Manhattan is a scary city at first because it is so fast-paced, a determined student will get used to it and have the time of their life!!
