Troy is accommodating to students, many of which find jobs, internships, community service opportunities, and educational opportunities within a short distance from campus. The city also accommodates students in the sense that there is plenty to do, including shops, restaurants, libraries, and museums. There is a lot to keep students entertained and an example of one event is Troy Night Out, a monthly arts night in the downtown area. Students tend to stay on campus during prime hours of the school week because it is easier to complete homework and to participate in events on campus. The College holds events and activities on a regular basis, so there is always something for students to do on campus, as well.
Students tend to spend most of their free time off campus in the surrounding area of Troy, either at night or on weekends. Russell Sage is located only a short distance away from many colleges in the region, including SUNY Albany, Hudson Valley Community College, Siena College, Saint Rose, and the Sage College of Albany. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the closest, only about two miles away. In the Troy area surrounding campus, it is not recommended to walk alone during the day or night. There have been safety issues off campus, mostly during the night, so students should always walk in groups and have emergency numbers programmed into their phones.
