Having a car on campus is a luxury not a necessity. Meals are provided on campus during the day and up until late at night. Cars are mostly necessary for going off campus to participate in other activities such as shopping, dinning or other activities. There are not many things to participate in outside of campus. Therefore the demand for campus, local, and long-distance transportation is minimal.

The University of Virginia at Wise is rather homogenous. The majority are Caucasian, followed by (in descending order): African Americans, Hispanics, Germans and other races. Nonetheless, educational opportunity is equal and there are no limits on what an individual can do based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, political or religious beliefs. Some have more of an economic advantage than others but the university is generous in giving scholarships to those who need them and helping in providing employment.

The off-campus housing for students would consist of Cavalier Housing, which is usually the second choice for students at my school.

A majority of the population at Wise consists of locals that commute from their homes. As for the on-campus students like myself, the classes are within walking distance from the dormitories.

UVA-Wise is such a small school there is a companionship between the different sports and zero isolation amongst the athletes. As a member of the Cross Country team, I can honestly say that I have attended every football, basketball, softball, volleyball, baseball, and tennis game that I have been able to attend without scheduling conflict. The facilities and the people that work there are top notch, and there is a very professional approach to the work done for the athletes.

The campus of UVA-Wise is right in near the main street of the town of Wise. The locals are very kind to out of town students, like myself. When class are not in session activities such as hiking, sports events, movies, and extracurricular events are available to all. There is no safer environment like the town of Wise and the surrounding towns of Pound, Coeburn, and Clintwood. Pound Lake which is a mere 20 minute drive from the campus is a big part of the nicer weather get togethers.

This is a small campus so everyone knows everyone and that's a good thing and a bad thing. but because is in the middle of no where and many old people live around here they are stuck in their ways so they are not big on making the area more college student friendly. So off campus unless you enjoy the outdoors and things of that sort, this may not be a place for the city lovers

All the really good stuff is about an hour away in Kingsport...but on a college budget Huddle house, and Mi finca are great. Also students get a discount card for the local restaurants round town.

To be the middle of nowhere, this is a beautiful campus. There are so many traditions at this school, and there always something new being build to expand campus.

Wise is in SW region of VA so there nothing but mountains and older people out here. Because everything is so much cheaper here, it is actually more affordable for some people to live off campus. the off campus options around the school are typically close to campus no more than a 10 min drive to campus. Even though this is a rural area and everyone here is very small town, most of the landlords that rent to students have very nice properties and are very lenient as far a payment they will typically wait until fin aid is processed for payment. The properties are surprisingly very nice many with new appliances and features. But the neighbors can be a problem, but that a possible problem anywhere. There is also Cav Housing apartments for students to live in with many different living options (studio or apartment style) and we just got word that there is about to be a new apartment complex about to start being built as a new off campus housing option. There are many trailer options too, it sound crazy but out here it's pretty normal and some of them are really nice and perfect size for a student.

I receive decent financial aid, but not enough to have to deal with the boring university. I have tried to transfer a couple times, but other universities did not offer enough money.

The area feels like it's isolated from the rest of the world. So there isn't much that goes on.

Nightlife is horrible at my university. There is only one local club, only older men hangout to drink. Too many students want to have "the party house," so students are spread out at different locations, which is bad due to fact that the college has low attendance number.

There isn't much strictness; however, students that acquire a position of some sort usually aren't allowed to have any fun off campus.

Good luck finding a spot. As a freshman you share parking with the football field. What this means? You have to move your car before a game and pray you can find a place to leave your car in between. If you do get parking you're likely parking in a gravel lot and it's near impossible to find a place. My recommendation? Live on campus or have someone drop you off.

If you're living on campus, get the full dining plan. Unless you have a lot of extra money for the drive (and a very active life style to work off the fast food), you don't want to eat off campus a whole lot. I found that if you get a dorm with a kitchenette, the best plan is to get like...1 meal on campus a day. The dining commons is okay, but I always went up to the sub bar in the student lounge. The options are more limited but higher quality. I found that as a vegetarian I was typically eating a dish full of sides. Unfortunately (except at breakfast) there aren't a whole lot of options for special diets.

I actually worked in the computer labs at UVA-wise for a couple of years during a work-study program. The computers are generally kept up to date. The labs get very crowded around mid-terms and finals so get your studying done early! The printers occasionally get jammed but you'll typically have a lab assistant (like I was) there to help out. Generally I didn't think the equipment was too difficult to use, but again, there's always someone around to help out if you need it.

There is literally no public transportation in the city of Wise. I couldn't find a single bus, cab, or really anything to get me to the school. The roads can be difficult to navigate in the winter too. Just remember: your life is more important than your grade.

I suppose this really depends on what you consider "good weather". The weather in the Appalachian mountains is unpredictable! Be sure to keep the weather hotline on your phone and check with professors to see if they've canceled class. Remember: just because there's snow doesn't mean anything is canceled & just because you can get to class doesn't mean your professors can.

There's really a careful balance that must be maintained at UVA-Wise. Make sure you research your professors before taking their classes. Some professors are amazing. They will challenge you, and be there when you need help. Others will make you want to slam your head against the desk while you beg for a professor that seems like they know what they're talking about. Text books are rarely actually used, so make sure you check with your professor before spending the cash. Overall, the classes aren't bad you just need to make sure you're paying attention and that you show up.

At the University of Virginia's College at wise, the hard drug scene isn't very visible. A lot of people drink alcohol, and a lot of people smoke cigarettes, but it's rare to see someone with any illegal substance. In the case that you do see someone--it's probably marijuana.

I graduated with a major in sociology in 2011. While the faculty did their best, we were severely limited. We had one full time sociology professor, and one that balanced between administration of justice (her main subject) and sociology. The workload was miniscule and I didn't feel challenged with my sociology classes. The classrooms were comfortable though, and in the rare chance that help was needed I could normally get an office appointment. However, even with the job fair on campus and graduating magna cum laude, I've yet to find a job in my specialty.

There are many restrictions that are not necessary for becoming adults.
