College Prowler Take

Students have mixed feelings about the diversity on campus. Some say that the campus is very diverse, while others do not at all. Many feel that the image of diversity is not portrayed that well, either. This is because students on campus tend to stick with people who share similar backgrounds in terms of race, social class, and ethnicity. There are also many organizations available for minority groups, which offers minorities the opportunity to find friends who share similar backgrounds.

It can take some time to meet new friends or to join a multicultural organization you are interested in, especially because students tend to surround themselves with people who share similar backgrounds. As a result, the image of diversity can become slightly skewed. The best advice for students who would like to overcome this standard is to join multicultural organizations or just reach out to someone who is very different from the people they normally hang out with.

So Much Diversity

A+

Most people think of diversity as black and white. I'm actually a transfer student, and I can tell you that diversity is so much more. I originally went to Elon University, where everyone looked, talked, acted, and dressed exactly the same. At Towson, there is literally any type of person you're looking for. From the nerds in the union to the sorority girls in P-Tux and everything in between.

Everyone Welcome

A

Towson University is mostly white and blck with a few other origins and exchange students or those studying abroad. I've never heard of any discrimination. Religion, race, color, sex, or sex orientation makes no difference here. You will however find it much like high school with its clicks of popular and unpopular. But the school is much to big for everyone to know if you are or aren't. Yet it is small enough to make a lot of long lasting friends.

When looking at the campus...

When looking at the campus topically, it may seem undiverse, but in actuality, Towson's numbers are comparable to the nation ratios when broken down by race. I do agree that campus life can be clique-y, but that's bound to happen when you have a medium-to-larger-sized student population. Towson is on that borderline, which allows you to recognize many people but still see a new face every day. Towson's Center for Student Diversity is a great resource and houses many student groups. Recently, they just completed their Multicultural Conference centered around interrogating privilege, which was very successful. Although I believe there could always be more diversity in any given setting, I don't want people looking at Towson to feel as if we're so white-washed or homogenized that you can't have a rich cultural experience. Personally, I believe the people that believe our campus is such don't seek out those experiences, which, on a 21,000-person campus, you have to do.
